Did you try to reset the device? Turn off the Archos, remove the battery. Near the 2.5" hard disk you will see a small golden button. Press it with the tip of a pen during 10 seconds. Put the battery back and turn on the device. Maybe it helps.
This problem seems to occur when the device overheats. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but most videos set at 720 by 480 wont play when the device is left running for a long period of time. The smaller video files, however, still play. I think it deals with the amount of system resources required for such files to play. If you turn the device off completely by going to menu, power, and turn off device, and leave it sit for 30 minutes, all files should play properly when you turn it back on.
As a suggestion, DO NOT leave your Archos powered on and on the dvr station. This causes the device to constantly run, and if you havent noticed the Archos operates at an extremely high temperature.
Also try the reset button just as a back up to what i have put.

You should perform this when it is on
problem solve #1
* Press the reset button on the buttom of the device using a papr clip. It should shut it off. then try to turn it on again.
try the next if the problem still exist.
Problem solve 2
* Download the latest frimware from Archos.com on to the desktop on your computer ( i recommend desktop because it will be easy to find) Then plug the device to a pc Using USB cable. turn the archos on by holding power switch and TV/LCD buttons at the same time until a white screen comes up. it should ask for Usb. if it does pick the ubs. if it does not give you a USB option but these "NO", "REPAIRE", "FORMAT" move the curser to repaire. do not pick the format which will delete all the contents and plugins you have on your device.
after repaire completes it should say done. do not press the done wait until you see the archos connection under My computer. it should normaly come up with name 504 or you will be able to see the archos icon. place the firmware in to the main drirector not under any folder. then press the ok button to confirm the "done" device will power off and start with a white screen again but this time it will update the firmware and restart do not unplug the Usb cable until the update completes. It should restart again and load the normal user interface. Your device should be fine and back to normal.
Don't be afraid! (I was) I was only getting the Green power light on and no further reaction. Wouldn't switch on and I was convinced it was the battery or the usb cable but I read the comments on this site and decided to have a go. I opened the back and was daunted when I saw the security seal. Was out of warranty anyhow so I thought what the hell! I removed the 2 small screws at the bases of the hard drive and lifted the unit forward. There on the pcb Was the small oval gold disc/button and I push it in with my small screw driver for about 10/20 seconds then put every thing back in place - and Hey Presto - powered up and worked a treat! Thanks to this site and its users from an 'absolute novice' with a little common sense! (important advise from my friend - discharge the static from your hands by tuching another metal object before opening the back of any PC or simular device) Barrie UK!
yes it is compatible but the remote wont work for Archos 504. also, u'll require saddle for 504(usually comes as part of package). dont try to put your archos on the dock without a saddle.
I had a similar problem remove the battery and push the gold coloured reset button. It worked on mine, You don't lose any info doing this. I got the advice from the Archos support phone number
