Upgrade Inspiron 2200 Memory From 512mb to 1gb

I want to upgrade my daughter's Dell 2200 Inspiron memory from 512mb to 1gb. I have the 1gb SODIMM memory but I'm not sure how to physicall replace it. The existing SODIMM is difficult to remove. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

I have the same problem w/a Inspiron 2200 there is fixed memory in one slot with a metal plate that also covers the empty memory slot this is not easy accessability! What is the solution, and why does this metal piece cover the empty slot with no directions in the manual on how to remove?

what are the steps to swap out the existing 1gb memory stick with a 2db stick? I've never worked on this or any other laptop.

Hi I'm using an Inspiron 2200 that I have upgraded the memory and hard drive on, and have also installed Windows 7 Home Premium.

  • tony_gibbs Apr 26, 2014

Inspiron 2200 cannot take 2GB SO-DIMM, but can only take 1GB + the 256MB on motherborad, making 1.25GB in total. Crucial.com should this when I scanned the laptop when I bought the RAM, and it all works fine. so 1.25GB RAM is the max on this laptop. I didn't have a metal plate in mine.

Dell is not helpful on this problem at all. Their manual (and accompanying videos) do not show the metal plate, so, guess what? Problem solved. Assume away the existence of the metal plate ("it shouldn't be there") and the problem goes away. Unfortunately the metal plate is there on my model and can't be removed via the memory panel. So it looks like I'm going to have to go in to the main computer and try to get at it that way. Not good.

I suspect STCOLE has the same problem I'm having. Inspirion computers come with standard "fixed" memory which can't be easily upgraded. Dell "fixed" the memory by making the stick physically larger than then the opening between the clips holding it in place. Options appear to be breaking out the old memory with needle nose pliers and risking damage or opening the case, removing the main board and dealing with the memory in a more open environment. I opened the case but removing the main board appears to be risky proposition. My new memory is still in the desk drawer. Any suggestions?

I have just done the RAM upgrade on my Dell Inspiron 2200 laptop, and it was very straight-forward.

I would start by downloading the Service Manual from http://support.euro.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins2200/en/index.htm as it tells you how to do it.

A summary is that you remove one screw and a removable panel from the underside of the laptop, and then push-aside 2 clips to remove the SO-DIMM RAM module and replace it.
- There is only one slot for momory, so I had to remove the 512MB module to replace it with 1GB.
- it took me about 30 minutes to do it, once I had the service manual and the parts.

I bought the new RAM module from Crucial.com , because they have software to scan the laptop to work out what the correct RAM upgrade is.

So you can do it, but read the instructions in the service manual first if you feel unsure.

Cheers,
Tony

Your laptop has integrated graphics and can't be upgraded

How do you remove and replace dell laptop memory? (d600)

I dont know this particular model, but usually it's underneath the computer, there is one screw to remove and you can take out a door which gives you acess to the memory slots. If it's not there, you will need to remove the top cover to get there. But it's most likely a small door underneath the laptop.

Dell memory issues

if the ram chips are not compatible you need to get ones that are.
your unit supports this type

Memory type 1.8-V SODIMM DDR-2
Minimum memory 256 MB
Maximum memory 2 GB

you can still put 2 gigs in it but it has to be the above type
here is a link to a manual
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6000/en/om/D5181bk5.pdf

and are you surprised that they say it will work. Thats why you have techs here, because the manufacturers hire people that don;t know from adam. same thing with apple. the techs you call are usless. Return your ram chips to dell and have them send you the ones that work.

Reg ram upgradation

Each memory slot on the C555NR can support a maximum of 1GB of RAM. There are actually 2 slots, but only one is easily accessible to you. By upgrading both the primary and secondary DIMMs, you could achieve a total of 2GB of memory but you would have to remove the 512mb chip that is already installed and replace it with 1GB (+1GB in the expansion slot as well.)

If you don't plan on taking the computer to a professional to be serviced, you will probably only want to upgrade the memory in the secondary slot located under the memory cover on the underside of the computer. It can handle a 1GB SODIMM.

FYI the memory is:
200 Pin DDR2-533 PC2-4200 SODIMM

Good luck!
