I have a Sony Walkman WM-A12 model with a broken circuit board. How best would I go about fixing it?

Sony WM-A12 All other components seem fine, it's just an issue with the circuit board.

A broken circuit board, depending on the break, where and how it is broken, often renders it scrap as it would require the skill of a surgeon to effect a repair with delicate tools such as a surgeon might wield. This is doubly so in the case of a double-sided circuit board...
A cracked circuit board on the other hand, where only a few tracks are broken, is a different matter. The crack can be realigned and stabilised with Superglue, the varnish carefully scraped from the damaged tracks either side of the crack for a quarter inch and then a suitable strand of solid copper wire soldered in to bridge the break.

Where a track is impossibly narrow, it is possible to solder in a short jumper wire from a suitable point to another convenient point, ensuring at all times to use as little heat as possible.

SOURCE: Sony Walkman WM-D6C

If your WM-D6C has a serial number below 267201 (take out the battery block and you'll see the serial number sticker there) then the problem is electronic, not mechanical. It is likely due to the speed controller chip (labeled as IC601 on the circuit board), which is made by Sony and is type CX20084. This chip decides the voltage that is fed to the motor which is only about 2.4 volts, Should the chip be defective then the motor receives about twice this voltage and thus runs too fast. If you take the back off the recorder you will see the circuit board; it looks like a rectangle with a small square extra bit sticking out to the right. It is here that the IC601 resides. It is about the size of a small pinky finger nail and has 8 tiny legs down each side. Measure the voltage on pin 15 (put one voltmeter probe (+) on the second leg down on the right side (pin 15) and the other one (-) on the battery negative), it should read about 4.8 volts, which it feeds into the base of transistor (Q601) that in turn will then feed 2.4 volts to the motor (if everything is working OK). If the chip is damaged, then the voltage on pin 15 will be close to zero, and the transistor Q601 will not be "held back" and so will feed about 5 volts to the motor. CX20084 is (unfortunately) obsolete, someone in the UK sells them for about $50, but an excellent company in Hong Kong (utsource.net) sells them for $5 (plus $8 S&H). Taking out the old chip and putting in a new one is close to microsurgery, you will need a micro soldering iron (18Watt Antex), a good eye, a powerful magnifying glass and a steady hand, but it can be done - I've done it! There is a possible second reason that could cause the motor to run too fast. There is a pick up coil on the main flywheel called FG901. If this is damaged it will be open circuit and then the only use for your recorder is probably a paper weight. You can test this by going back to chip IC601 and locating pin 1 (top left pin; a small circle on the body of the chip is next to pin 1), Pin 1 is connected to the positive side of a capacitor,  C602 (0.47 microF), check the resistance from the negative side of C602 to the ground (take battery out, and use battery (-) as ground). You should get about 600 - 650 ohms reading. If you get nothing, sorry there is not much you can do about it as these pick up coils are definitely not available. Finally, chip 601 (CX20084) goes bad if you connect the batteries back to front. Good luck. Giles..

SOURCE: how to replace the drive belt on the sony walkman

Since this is a very small player what is important is to be very careful and delicate to open the rear cover and do the repair. The printed circuit board has to be removed and moved up carefully not to damage or detach wires. Now remove the capstan cap and take out the old belt, check the size with the new one and if OK run in the same direction you had taken out. replace the lid and the pcb carefully and fix the wires according to the same pattern so as not to touch the belt and drives. Now put in a cassette and test. If it works ok with the speed close the rear cover. clean the headd, the rollers and the transport section . Now your tape has been serviced and must work well. Hope my advice helps you . Good day

Speedproblem. My wm-d6 walkman goes way to fast! More than twice as fast normal speed 4,75cm/s. Is there anything I can do about it myself or is it a component failing? /Mats

Inside the unit, theres a capacitor or something on the circuit board that has a little phillips head screw area on it, that if you turn it either clockwise or counter clockwise, you can adjust the speed of the cassette playback. This is usually a silver metal thing sticking up somewhere inside kind of shaped like a letter "U'. the inside of the "U' is a round insert like I said with a phillips head screwdriver cut out. just turn that inner piece left or right while playing a cassette to your desired speed.

I have a sony walkman WM-3. It suddenly stopped playing. Do you do repairs ?

Please check for the belts if the battery you have installed is new and the set gives a hum on play. If not you will have to check the power switch, the mechanism switch and the line to the main board.
If the motor turns but not the capstan and the reel then change the belt, the rollers or the pulley. I hope this will get your set back to action. Good day

My Sony Walkman WM -SR10 is not recording and the cassette tape is not working. Only the radio is player. And I cannot get another one to buy even its not the same. Can you help me

Hello aga2958,
I think you need to visit maintenance center to fix that cause its hardware problem.
But you can check somethings before u visit them .. like:
1. If you are using Batteries to power up the Walkman .. be sure the batteries are full charged.
2. Try to power on the Walkman by Adapter 3 Volts.
3. Be sure the tapes you are using are fine into other Cassette.
Thanks for using FixYa.
