Do I need to use an optical fiber cable to hook up a Norcent DVD player with 4 speakers? I am using RCA jacks and get beautiful background sound, but no actual speaking sounds. Thanks!

Quick and dirty:

From the back of the RCA unit make sure you are using the auxiliary input jacks to connect to the output jacks on the TV.

You will need to go into the setup menu on your TV to select an external sound system and finally you'll need to select auxiliary on the RCA unit to hear the sound from your TV.

Verify the media you're playing is coded for 5.1 surround (bluray or DVD with 5.1).

If it is, you'll need to go into the sound settings and go through all the settings in there for your sound card, to be sure it will push the appropriate codec (5.1, 7.1, stereo, mono, etc.) out the output.

Verify you are pushing the sound through either an HDMI cable, digital coax cable, or fiber optic cable. Regular RCA jacks will only push stereo (2 speaker).

I couldn't get all my speakers to kick on through my Harman/Kardon until I made my PC force Dolby Digital through the fiber optic cable.

Hi,here is the solution......
Since you successfully connected your DVD /Receiver to play video on TV (one way only ) ,here is the second reverse action to listen your TV on DVD /Receiver
** you need to connect "Audio Output " as can either be : RCA jacks or "Optic cable output" or "SCART "connector " of your TV ,
** to "TV input "or "AUX input" or "Optic Cable input"of your DVD /Receiver (whichever you want based on the necessary cables on your hand )
** than just switch to respective mode on DVD /Receiver corresponding the connector you have used on the back of DVD /Receiver ..
*You can use "HDMI" connections as well but sometimes HDMI creates problem on Audio..

There you go..Both Tv and Xbox sound are on the DVD /Receiver as SURROUNDING SOUND .By this means ,whatever you watch on the TV will come thru your DVD /Receiver SURROUNDING SOUND .

To listen your TV on your samsung ps wx30 surround sound system ,
** you need to connect "Audio Output " RCA jacks or "Optic cable output" or "HDMI out " of your TV unit
** to "AUX input " or "TV" OR "Any input" of your dvd player or "Optic Cable input" or "HDMI input"
** than just switch to respective mode on dvd player corresponding your RCA or Optic connection or HDMI ..

There you go..Your TV sound is on the dvd player By this means whatever you watch on the
TV (tuner, satellite , Xbox , etc..) ,it's sound will come thru your dvd player.

Your DVD audio is sent directly to your receiver - not to you TV. That's why you can hear the audio on your stereo. The TV audio is not being sent anywhere - it is "stuck" in the TV and is amplified and sent to the TV speakers. Since the TV speakers are off, you don't hear anything. In order to listen to the TV audio on the stereo system's speakers, you need to send it to the receiver.

You need to have a pair (left + right signals) of audio cables (assuming you wish to listen to stereo sound) from the TV's Audio Output jacks to a pair of Audio Input jacks on the receiver / amplifier. You can use any unused input - CD, Video, Tape, Sat, etc. If you use Tape or Sat audio inputs, when you wish to listen to the TV audio, you must select the Tape or Sat input on the receiver.

Do not send more than one signal to a set of inputs on the receiver. Typically, a CD, DVD and Sat inputs offer two or more of the following types 1) Analog audio. These are the older RCA jacks that have been around since the beginning and require separate cables for left and right channels. 2) Optical inputs. This is the newer digital interface that provides for Dolby Digital (and others) format sound over a single fiber optic cable. 3) Coaxial inputs. This jacks looks like an RCA jack, but usually has an Orange ring - instead of the Red & White rings that analog RCA jacks have. They use a single coaxial cable. 4) HDMI input. This jacks carries both digital video and digital audio signals. If you are using an Optical input for the DVD on the receiver, do not use any other unused analog or digital inputs associated with the DVD to "piggyback" another device like a CD , VHS tape, etc.

You don't need to send audio TO a TV. I's a TV, not a source of anything. Many of us use monitors (no TV speakers). The Bose speakers are presumably superior to the TV speakers so whatever the TV is watching (cable/sat/dvd) shuld have its own audio.

There are Yellow Video jacks on the DVD and TV for Video.

There are Red and White RCA Jacks for Sound.

Or

Fiber Optic Toslink for sound.

That is called a TOSLink cable, it is indeed fiber optic. It is for digital audio only, video is carried by HDMI (which also carries digital audio), component video cables, S-video cable, coaxial cable, or RCA jacks.

For your surround sound from a DVD player, connect your digital audio from the DVD to the receiver's input, then the video out from the DVD to the receiver's input. Now the video out from the receiver goes to the TV and the surround sound should now be coming through your speakers. Post again in this thread if you need more help or explanation.

you can run a fiber optic cable out of the tv into the surround system if the sytem has a fiber optic input, or your tv should at least have red and white rca cables for audio out, then you just pick any input on the surround sound and any audio from dvd players ect thats hooked up to the tv will be sent through that one input on the surround sound. The only thing you'll have to do is turn the volume up or down on your sound system.

i have the htr 5230 and i had the same prob ... are you using fiber optic ??? try the effects like pro logic. or 5.1
