For your question, i have replied many people, why generator set can start but not generate electricity?
Here is some reasons for reference:
1.After the diesel generator is stopped, the residual magnetism is often lost, because the material used for the magnetic pole of the exciter is close to the soft steel, and the residual magnetism is small. After the shutdown, when there is no current in the excitation winding, the magnetic field will disappear.
2.The magnetic pole of the diesel generator loses its magnetic properties.
3.Damage of excitation circuit components or circuit breakage, short circuit or grounding phenomena.
4.The exciter brush is not in good contact with the commutator and pressure of brush holder is insufficient.
5.Excitation winding wiring error, opposite polarity.
6.Stator winding and rotor winding of generator set open circuit.
7.Poor contact between diesel generator brush and slip ring, or insufficient brush pressure.
8.Diesel generator lead wire wiring is loose or switch contact is poor.
9.The fuse box is fused.
10.The "auto-manual-de-excitation" switch on the control panel is in the de-excitation position (automatic generator set has "auto-manual-de-excitation" switch).
11.The voltmeter is damaged.
12.Rotary rectifier module is damaged.

Most generators (except the latest inverter generators)
produce power directly dependent on RPM's.
The governor adjustment is critical.
This usually is in the form of an adjuster that through a spring, applies a preload to the governor arm.
The governor arm is attached to a shaft that disappears into the motor. Inside there is usually a set of weights that when spun faster will attempt to slow the motor and when spinning too slowly will attempt to increase revs. The adjustment you need to make is to the preload spring.
They are very sensitive to the motor being in good tune so do the air cleaner, spark plug etc before trying to get it right. Under voltage can do more damage than over voltage so take your time and get it to a good steady correct voltage with your usual expected load on it. A safety trip out box gives you a way to test voltage with a load on & some protection.
Work safe

'Vent is leaking while running': can be caused by varnish on the inlet needle/seat and debris in the float bowl.
Fuel Starvation - Float Bowl Carburetor
1) remove air filter assembly
*be cautious of tearing the mounting gasket. If it does tear, you HAVE to replace it. It is part of the priming system
2) remove the float bowl fastener. This is the main jet
3) carefully remove the float bowl, the rubber o-ring/gasket will not be able to be used if it is removed, you WILL have to replace it
4) using a spray 'carb cleaner'
spray up thru the center of the carburetor
spray and clean the main jet with cleaner and 'tag' wire
(tag wire is very thin, and can be used to clean the hole in the center of the main jet)
5) clean any debris from inside the bowl or carb body
6) re-install bowl and center bolt, air filter assembly
*if you need gaskets, your Briggs dealer can supply. The kit is cheaper than individual gaskets, and all the parts needed to finish the above repair are in the kit.

At the controller, you need to see if it is actually sending electricity out of the Generator/Alternator, have a look where the leads from the power making unit mates, (Think of it as a motor in reverse) onto the board. There should be an AC Voltage there, then, work back, or out from there, trace the Voltage until it stops, thats the problem... Check the Breaker isn't tripped or faulty too.

The plunger is stuck where the governor rod which is spring attached to the frame is. If you locate the governor metal rod on the lower level of the unit. zrock it to a higher rpm as you would a car carburator from under the hood.
This will free the plunger and the green light will go on and your current meter will register 120 volts.
When you lay up the generator for quite some time it often sticks closed. With monthly start up you will no have this problem reoccurr.

The problem might be with your eyesight. This small generator produces a maximum output of 650 watts. Any hairdryer uses way more than this, as you could see it on the label.
