WS-5551 only on/off button works, won't respond to remote at all

My tv has progressivly gotten worse. Randomly it would turn itself off. Ramdomly sound but no picture when first turned on. Now the on/off button is the only one working and the tv won't respond to the remote. the volume is stuck at one level and if i press button to increase/decrease the screen flickers and scrambles while pressing the button, but then goes back to same level and screen clears.

Take off the speaker grill, you will see 2 wire plugs, turn the tv on, disconnect both plugs, if it now works with the remote then you need to replace all of the front switches, or leave them unplugged and use the remote, if this doesn't work, you have a bad dm board or signal module which could get very expensive.

Power button only one that won't turn power on

Have the remote tested either with a tester that most shops have or in a dark room with a digital camera the display will faintly flash when remote pointed at it and buttons pressed.

Also if button does not work (power) unplug the set for a while to see if it will reset. If the tester shows same problem--no working for power or have to press ******* buttons 99% chance something got spilled onto remote and got inside

57" Toshiba projection TV randomly turns itself off and on

Look for loose connections in the power supply (plug, socket).

TV is not responding to the remote control.

The set may have defaulted to a front panel lockout. To defeat that on the front of the set hold down the MENU button for 15 seconds and see if it will then power up. I know that doesn't solve the problem with the remote but one step atta time. These sets are prone to leaky switches on the control panel and when that happens the micro cannot accept two different commands at the same time. That could be why the remote is not working.

Help!

I don't know if this will help your problem, but we were having similar problems with our Toshiba 32A33. None of the buttons on the TV or remote worked, the volume would go up and down uncontrollably, it wouldn't turn back on unless unplugged for several hours
Try either taping a penny very firmly over the TV/video button on the set to keep it depressed at all times, or wedging a piece of plastic in it to keep it down (Cardpsycho's solution).  However you do it, keeping this button depressed solved every problem we had.
