I replaced the 6 color ink cartridges, but not the black one. I get "ink system failure, turn off the printer and turn it back on " When I press "oK", I get the message, "do not turn off by unpluging or turning off the surgeprotector or you may damage the printer"
any suggestions ?

The printer should have its own ON/OFF switch (or button).
Always use that control to turn-off the printer.
The printer reacts to the 'OFF' signal by properly shutting itself down, and then cutting the power to itself.

When powered up press the ink button. This should cause the print head to move to the middle the printer and then back. If it parks properly then everything should be fine. However, if it stops against an ink cartridge it's indicating a problem (no ink/ faulty cartridge). So replace it and repeat the process x3 (ie.for the 3 other cartridges). Once complete the printer should be OK. All this should be covered in the HP user manual. HP Official Site Laptop Computers Desktops Printers Servers Services and...
that error means its a ink system failure which is caused by air from the tube.
Reset the system by holding down the OK, Cancel, Black, and Color
buttons down at the same time and turn the printer off. Keep holding the
buttons down until the printer shuts off and the turn it back on. You
will have to turn the printer off twice and then it will recalibrate.

Follow the instructions on this web page http://www.ccl-la.com/blog/index.php/hp-photosmart-ink-system-failure-1/ to prime ink through the lines and hopefully clear the error. I don't know why HP sent you new ink cartridges when it should be obvious to them that the cartridges are not the problem.

i had exactly this error message. Rang HP. They said it was a hardware failure, they couldn't fix over phone, would cost 2x cost of new printer to fix, but they offered me 20% discount on new printer if ordered over the phone.
But with some fiddling, problem now resolved. Here's what I did:
- press Red Eye Removal and Print Photos button together
- goes to Mfg Commands -> Enter Special Keys Combo. Press OK
- uaiux Support page (some code) -> click right arrow key until you get to System Configuration Menu - click oK
- should say hardware failure status - click OK
- says hardware failure status: Clear. Press OK to clear
- I clicked OK on this and system reset itself and problem was solved
Solution
Replace the indicated ink cartridge(s), or press
OK
on the control panel to continue.
HP recommends the use of genuine HP ink cartridges. Genuine HP ink
cartridges are designed and tested with HP printers to help produce
great results, time after time.
NOTE:
HP
cannot guarantee the quality or reliability of non-HP ink. Printer
service or repairs required as a result of printer failure or damage
due to the use of non-HP ink will not be covered under warranty.
Follow these steps to replace the depleted HP ink cartridge(s).
Step one: Replace the indicated cartridge(s)
Make sure the HP All-in-One is turned on.
NOTE:
The Attention light blinks when the product is turned on.
Open the access door by lifting from the front center of the HP All-in-One, until the door
locks into place.
Figure 1: Opening the access door
Squeeze the bottom of the latch below the ink cartridge to replace, and then
lift the latch.
To replace the black ink cartridge, lift the latch on the far left.
To replace one of the five color ink cartridges, such as yellow, light cyan
(blue), cyan, light magenta (pink), or magenta, lift the appropriate latch in the center
area.
Figure 2: Lifting the latch1 - Ink cartridge latch for the black ink cartridge 2 - Ink cartridge latches for the color ink cartridges
Pull the ink cartridge towards you out of its slot to remove it.
Figure 3: Removing the ink cartridge
Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging.
Holding the new ink cartridge by the handle,
push the ink cartridge into the empty slot.
Match the color and pattern of the ink cartridge to the color and pattern on the print
carriage.
Figure 4: Inserting the new cartridge
Close the latch, and make sure it is secure.
Close the access door.
Figure 5: Closing the access door
Step two: Align the new ink cartridge(s)
Make sure paper is
loaded in the input tray, and then press the
OK
button.
The HP All-in-One prints the alignment page, aligns the printhead, and
initializes the ink cartridges. This takes approximately 5 minutes.
CAUTION:
Do not disconnect or turn off the
HP All-in-One during this time. You may hear the
HP All-in-One making noises.
Check the display for status, and then press
the
OK
button. Recycle or discard the alignment page.
