>first run fax test, press set up go to tools menu then select run fax test, all entries should be pass
>then check your connections, do you have one line or number for your fax and phone?or a separate line or another number for fax and another number for phone?
>let me assume you only have one number for fax and phone..
>check connections, this should be downstream connection, the fax machine using the black phone cord provided by hp should be connected directly to the phone jack using line 1 at the back of the fax and the answering machine or the telephone should be connected to ext 2 or line 2 at the back of the fax...there should be no other devices phone or answering machine connected directly to the phone jack.
>next set rings to answer on the fax machine higher than the answering machine...if your rings to answer on answering machine is 4 rings, set the fax to 6 rings...if it is a voice call the answering machine will pick it up at 4 rings then if it detects that it it a fax tone then it will transfer the call to fax.
>also check if auto answer is on in your fax
>you can check auto answer and rings to answer by pressing set up or menu button on your machine look for it in basic fax settings or advance settings
>also check if your voice prompt for your answering machine is not too short there should be like at least 5 seconds after cutting your message to allow the machine to transfer the call to the fax if it is a fax tone.

You seem to have chosen the correct answering mode which is ans/fax.Also pls check whether DRPD mode is correctly set .
It should be off in case your tel line does not have dual ring feature.

SOURCE: Brother Intellifax 1270

There is a help menu on this machine. To print this out, just press the help button. To change the fax/tel ring, 1st have in mind how you want your fax machine to work. Do you have an a TAD connected? Do you want the fax machine to take priority over tel calls? The fax machine seizes the line after the set number of rings, that means any other device connected to other phone outlets, will not answer after the fax has answered. Have this in mind when you set the ring time. The TAD will have it's own ring time too.

How to receive a fax

Check if the auto answer is turned on. Also, check the ring pattern if it is set to Auto. If this is a shared line with your phone and you have an answering machine, set your fax to pick up 5 rings higher than your answering machine.

If you have a voicemail service, you'll need to get a distinctive ring feature from your phone company for it to work.

I can not receive faxes on my Dell MFP 1125

Hi, I have Dell 1125 All-in-One Laser Printer. I can send faxes by going to fax option and dialing the number.

How can I set it up to receive faxes? keep in mind that I have only one phone line which I use for both phone and fax.

How can I set the ringers in a way that for example at 4th ring goes to answering machine and at 6th ring goes to fax?

I really appreciate it.

It will only automatically pick up the line when set to "fax". You need to subscribe to a "distinctive" ring (which is a double ring) service through your telephone company and set the rings to answer appropriately so as to not conflict with your voicemail

How do I use use a distinctive ring to separate the incoming fax from the incoming normal calls I want to direct to the answering machine. I am from S. Africa. I am using an all in one Samsung SCX-4521F. I...

Firstly, you will need to get a 2nd ringtone from your phone provider. Most of them will provide a designated "fax ring" (not a new number) for little or no cost.

In DRPD mode, you can receive a call using the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD) feature. “Distinctive Ring” is a telephone company service which enables a user to use a single telephone line to answer several different services.

Using the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection feature, your fax machine can “learn” the ring pattern you designate to be answered by the fax machine. Unless you change it, this ringing pattern will continue to be recognized and answered as a fax call, and all other ringing patterns will be forwarded to the
extension telephone or answering machine plugged into the EXT. jack. You can easily suspend or change Distinctive Ring
Pattern Detection at any time.

Before using the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection option, Distinctive Ring service must be installed on your telephone line by the telephone company. To set up Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection, you will need access to another telephone or someone available to dial your fax number from outside (a cell phone will do!).

To set up the DRPD mode:

1 Press Menu until “Fax Setup” appears on the top line of the display.
2 Press the scroll button ( or ) until you see “Receive Mode” on the bottom line and press Enter.
3 Press the scroll button ( or ) until you see “DRPD Mode” on the bottom line and press Enter.
4 When “Set” displays on the bottom line, press Enter.
“Waiting Ring” appears on the display.
5 Call your fax number from another telephone. It is not necessary to place the call from a fax machine.
6 When your machine begins to ring, do not answer the call.
The machine requires several rings to learn the pattern.
When the machine completes learning, the LCD displays “End DRPD Setup”.
If the DRPD setup fails, “DRPD Ring Error” appears. Press Enter when “DRPD Mode” displays and retry from step 3.
7 To return to Standby mode, press Stop/Clear.
When the DRPD feature is set up, the DRPD option is available in the Receive Mode menu.

To receive faxes in the DRPD mode,
you need to set the menu to DRPD;

NOTES:
• DRPD must be set up again if you re-assign your fax number, or connect the machine to another telephone line.

• After DRPD has been set up, call your fax number again to verify that the machine answers with a fax tone. Then have
a call placed to a different number assigned to that same line to be sure the call is forwarded to the extension telephone or answering machine plugged into the EXT. jack.

• In Tel mode, you can receive a fax by picking up the handset of the extension phone and then pressing the remote receive code Alternatively, you can press On Hook
Dial
(you can hear a fax tone from the remote machine) and then press Start on the control panel of your machine.
• In the Fax mode, the machine answers an
incoming call and immediately goes into fax
reception mode.
• In Ans/Fax mode, the answering machine answers an incoming call, and the caller can leave a message on the answering machine. If the fax machine senses a fax tone on the line, the call automatically switches to Fax mode.
• In DRPD mode, you can receive a call using the Distinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD) feature. This option is available only when you set up the DRPD Mode.

The full user manual for your machine is located here

Hope that is of help to you :)

How do I set up my X7170 to receive a FAX?

Link
Receiving a fax You can choose to receive a fax automatically, manually, or through an answering machine.
Note: For your All-In-One to receive a color fax, the machine from which you are receiving must also support color faxes.
Automatically Recommended for a dedicated fax line
Your All-In-One automatically accepts incoming faxes using the automatic answering mode. When the Auto Answer light is on, the All-In-One receives a fax after the specified number of rings set in the Options menu.
To set a number of rings for the automatic answering mode:
  1. On the control panel, press Mode repeatedly until Fax is selected.
  2. Press Options until ANSWER FAX WHEN appears.
  3. Press + to choose After 1 ring, After 2 rings, After 3 rings (default), or After 5 rings.
  4. Press Select.
  5. Make sure the Auto Answer light on the All-In-One is on.
When the number of rings that you set is detected, the All-In-One automatically receives your fax.
Manually Recommended for a shared fax and telephone line
You can choose which incoming faxes to accept by setting your All-In-One to manual answering mode.
  1. Make sure the All-In-One Auto Answer light is off.
  2. Press *9* on the telephone after you answer the telephone and hear fax tones.
  3. Hang up the telephone.
The All-In-One receives your fax.
Answering machine Recommended for a shared fax and telephone line
To receive a fax with an answering machine connected to your All-In-One, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the All-In-One does. For example, if you set the answering machine to answer calls after 3 rings, set the All-In-One to answer calls after 5 rings.
  1. On the control panel, press Mode repeatedly until Fax is selected.
  2. Press Options until ANSWER FAX WHEN appears.
  3. Press + until After 5 rings appears.
  4. Press Select.
  5. Make sure the Auto Answer light on the All-In-One is on.
When a ring is detected, the answering machine picks up the call.
  • If a fax is detected, the All-In-One receives the fax and disconnects the answering machine.
  • If not, the answering machine completes the call.
Note: You must set up the equipment as shown in connecting to an answering machine.

Have to be near fax machine to recieve fax

The Rings to Answer feature might not be set to answer after the
appropriate number of rings for your office setup.
If you have a voice mail service at the same phone number you use
for fax calls, you must receive faxes manually, not automatically. For
information on how to receive faxes manually, see receive a fax
manually from a phone
on page 48.
If you have a PC modem on the same phone line with your
HP Officejet, check to make sure that the modem’s software is not
set to receive faxes automatically. Modems with this auto fax
receive feature turned on will take over the phone line to receive all
incoming faxes, which will prevent the HP Officejet from receiving
fax calls.
If you have an answering machine on the same phone line with
your HP Officejet, you might have one of the following problems:
Your outgoing message might be too long or too loud to allow
the HP Officejet to detect fax tones, and the calling fax machine
might disconnect.
Your answering machine might not have enough quiet time after
your outgoing message to allow the HP Officejet to detect fax
tones. This problem is more common with digital answering
machines.
The following actions might help solve these problems:
a. Disconnect the answering machine and then try receiving a fax.
If faxing is successful without it, the answering machine might
be causing the problem.
b. Reconnect the answering machine and re-record your outgoing
message. Make sure the message is as short as possible (no
more than 10 seconds long), and that you speak softly and
slowly when recording it. Try again to receive a fax.
If you have a special ring pattern for your fax phone number (using
a distinctive ring service through your telephone company), make
sure that the Answer Ring Pattern feature on your HP Officejet is set
to match. For example, if the phone company has assigned your
fax number a double ring pattern, make sure Double Rings is
selected as the Answer Ring Pattern setting. For information on
changing this setting, see change the answer ring pattern
(distinctive ringing)
on page 63.
Note that some ring patterns cannot be recognized by the
HP Officejet, such as those with alternating short and long ringing
patterns. If you are having problems with a ring pattern of this type,
ask your phone company to assign a non-alternating ring pattern.

To recieve fax on brother

Press the 'RECEIVE MODE' button on the right side of the control panel, its next to the large 'FAX START' button. Here are your options :

Select Receive Mode
MANUAL
—You must answer all calls yourself. If you hear fax tones, press
Fax Start
to begin receiving the fax, then hang up. You can use this mode with
Distinctive Ringing. (See
Distinctive Ring
, page 8-1.)
FAX ONLY
—The fax machine automatically answers every call as a fax call. You
cannot receive a voice call, but you can dial out and make a voice call.
FAX/TEL
—The fax machine automatically answers every call. If the call is a fax, it
prints the fax. If the call is not a fax, it signals you with a double-ring (ring-ring),
different from the phone company ringing, to alert you to pick up the call. If you select
this setting, you’ll need to set the Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time features (on the
following pages). If you have extension phones on the same line as the fax machine,
set Ring Delay to 4. (See
For FAX/TEL Mode Only
, page 5-5.)
TAD:ANSWER MACH.
—This is the only setting in which you can use an external
answering machine. Your telephone answering device is connected to your fax
machine, and answers every call. Once the TAD answers, the fax machine listens for
fax tones. If it detects fax tones, it prints the fax.
The TAD setting works
only
with an external telephone answering device (TAD); it
does not work with telephone company Voice Mail. Ring Delay and F/T Ring Time
do
not
work in this setting.
