SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR500 Dolby Digital problem

I just read over the problem you were having with your Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. It sound like the unit needs to be setup for all five channels.Sence your symptom says the diplay shows Dolby D3/2.1. According to the owners manual with the remote control look for speaker setup whin the button is pressed the current speaker setup will be shown in the display. Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. SOURCE: No audio on any channel, even in audio setup mode, no audio headp

If you have any of its sound outputs connected to a TV or tape deck do they get the signal? If so, then we know there is sound processing somewhere inside the unit but not emerging to anyplace that requires amplification.

A quick basic check would be to tune an FM station, run an RCA cable pair from the audio output for a tape deck (see the picture at the link) to an analog audio input on your TV. Select that input on the TV and you shouls hear the FM station, or anything the receiver is configured to play. If it's silent then there is no audio signal circulating in the receiver to get out to the amplifiers.

Check to make sure Multi-Channel input is not selected unless that is what you're listening to as it bypasses all other sources analog and digital EXCEPT the tape; and check any Mute or Zone Controls, too.

If you hear the program on the TV but not through any attached speakers, then the amplifiers are all disabled for some reason. The click I asked about before... when you turn it on does it get a click about 5 seconds later. That would be the protection circuitry turning OFF to allow the amplifiers to function.

I notice it has a Tape function. Make sure it isn't selected as it assumes a tape deck or processor is attached and will only play back what would be coming FROM the tape deck or processor. On my Pioneer receiver it also disables any digital signal processing.

Sometimes when I'm watching TV with the remote on the seat someone moves and something bad happens. It's always some unfamiliar button that gets touched unintentionally. Look over the remote for things like MUTE, Multi-CH, Tape.

SOURCE: VERY LOW VOLUME FROM SORROUND SPEEKERs

some surround sounds do not put out loud sounds except from the front speakers only. Try using different inputs to see if it makes a difference.

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-DS696 receiver center channel not working

The center setting is set to small. I have read the manual twice. The dialog when the volume is at a maximum level is noisy, but can still make out the dialog, no crackling, heaving hissing. (note only the center speaker is plugged in, and all other speakers are left disconnected so that I can only analyze the behavior of the center channel output). I am trying to narrow the issue down to a bad relay or more than likely a burned out transistor(s) or a capacitor.

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-DS696. No right channel speaker sound

hello there 2 transistor 1 for the right channel and 1 for the left first thing 2 do is a visual check in good light check for any burn't part or any bulging capacitors if everythink looks ok then check underneath the board for dry joints if then you will need a mulitmeter to start testing components

Hooked to surround sound, two front speakers, 4 wall speakers, 1 sub woofer. Restart unit and reduce volume unit is OK but normal talking is too low.

Voice tracks are usually routed to the center channel. You don't mention having a center channel speaker hooked up. If this is the case, then you need to go into the receivers setup menu and set it for no center. This will reroute the voice tracks to your front speakers.

Onkyo TX-DS696 receiver center channel not working

Can you say explicitly that the Center Channel speaker is defined as something other than NONE?

And how does dialog sound? If it sounds ok you're routing it to the front speakers. This is from the manual...

"For ideal Surround effects, all speakers should be installed. If a
center speaker or subwoofer is not connected, the sound from the unused channel is properly distributed to the connected speakers in order to produce the best Surround sound possible."

TX-SR803 with no sound or popping hissing on any input

It is common for a short term power surge to open up the internal fuse in the main power transformer. Without testing some components inside the unit, I really can't say for sure whether or not the unit is worth repair. I would suggest that you invest in a detailed repair estimate at an authorized Onkyo service center.

Center speaker

I had the exact same problem. In order to "almost" balance the center with the other channels I had to give the center +12db gain and the other channels -12db. So after I got that far with level calibration I tried some tv sound, well the center although was playing sounded like the highs were missing and a bit distorted. This is the good part, I turned the volume all the way up real fast, somewhere near max something fixed itself, the center became very loud. Now it works just like new. Hope this helps. BTW, the problem existed the same for sub channel, so when the center started working so did the sub.

Power shuts off when I try and turn the volume up on the center channel. Center channel volume is very low and i can barley hear it. any suggestions?

Verify that you don't have a bad speaker in the center enclosure. Any change in there will cause an "impedance mismatch".  ...accordianman
