DC24's brush bar is engineered to shut off for protection if something jams it. Once you've checked the cleaner head for any obstructions, and removed any threads or hair from around the brush bar, you should be able to reset your machine as shown in our video guide:
It may help to use something like the eraser-end of a pencil to press the red reset button - you should feel a click as it engages.
Please note, the brush bar will never rotate when your machine is standing upright. Make sure you recline your DC24 into the normal vacuuming position before testing it.
I'm confident this will resolve the issue, but if you would like some further advice from our experts, please call us directly on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Note: The brush will not rotate when the machine is locked in the upright position, because an internal micro-switch turns the brush motor off.
- Check the belt through the clear brush cover. If this appears damaged or broken, please take your machine to a local BISSELL Authorized Service Center to have this replaced. If the belt is intact, please continue checking the following:
- Ensure both power switches are turned on when you check for brush rotation. - Unplug the power cord and remove the handle completely. Slide handle back into the lower section of handle, ensuring the screw is in tight. If the handle is not aligned properly, this will affect the power of the brush motor. - Look for debris wrapped around the brush (i.e. string, hair, fibers, etc.). When the machine is unplugged, cut away any visible hair, fibers or debris from the brush roller. This brush is NOT removable from the machine. - If something has become lodged in the foot and the brush shuts off, turn off the vacuum and unplug this from the outlet. You can now remove the obstruction. The brush will automatically reset when the vacuum is plugged in and turned back on.
If you continue to experience difficulty with this, please take your machine to the following Service Center in your area. The warranty on this machine is five years.
Likely the wires are broken under the left hand cover not a difficult fix. Unplug the machine and remove the 4 torx screws and an access panel at the side of the ball. replace wires with new or re-connect with a splice. ensure wires are long enough to allow movement and you don't trap the wires when you replace the covers. about a 20 min job with the right tools
Your rest should only be required once if the head stops. If it continues to shut off , you likely have hair or thread wound around the brush in the bearings or a motor which needs to be cleaned and lubricated.Try rolling the brush by hand if it is tight it needs service. Most of these heads have a headlite housing which pops off to reveal two hidden screws. remove those and look for others near the neck of the head Once removed the housing lid comes off to allow access to the brush. remove the brush but be careful not to lose any spacer washers on the ends, Clean out any hair and thread and invert the belt to inspect if it has teeth , look for cracks or missing teeth. rotate the motor drive with your fingers. it should spin freely . If it is tight or grinds or scratchs you need to have it serviced or replaced. If the shaft feels tight 1 DROP of sewing machine oil or WD 40 on each end of the shaft will help, but clean out any dust first. the reassemble in reverse order.
It appears that the end of the brush is getting jammed with hairs, treads, and/or dust or the belt may be worn. Try taking the brush out and hold it by the ends and try to turn it. It should turn quite easily if it is working good. If not try taking the ends off and clean them out. Also, make sure the belt is good.
I can not pinpoint what exactly solved the issue. I opened the bottom conver, cleaned any presence of hair, cleaned all hoses (yes hose was completely clogged), made sure that the brush bar was engaged by switching the selector back and forth few times from Carpet to Bare floor. (On bare floor setting, brush bar won't rotate).
Now I am happy that the vacuum is completely cleaned and back in operation!
