SOURCE: how to cahnge the battery on a sentry safe
There is a small opening on the front number panel of safe. Use a small hex screwdriver or pin to insert into opening. It will open up the front panel (slide panel to right to take off) showing you 4 AA batteries. Just replace and close panel. Very simple to do. I wish the manual show me how. Instead of trying to figure it out for hours.

You must replace the batteries located in under the keypad.
Use a large paperclip to unlock the cover. Push the paperclip into the small hole while at the same time, sliding the battery cover to the right. Gently remove the battery housing and replace batteries. You will have to reset your password again, but can find the directions to do so by going to the Sentry site: http://www.sentrysafe.com/pdfs/OwnersManuals/172967.pdf,

SOURCE: sentry 1610 safe - battery is dying?
I have 2 Sentry 1610 Safes. A fresh alkaline battery MAY open the safe once (maybe twice), and then the same problem. I have a variable DC power supply that I hook up to the battery terminals, set to 9 volts and increase the current until the keypad responds & the deadbolt releases. Sentry has no solution for this problem, as this model is too old & they have no parts or troubleshooting. If you know someone with a small DC Power Supply, you can get your safe open / closed.
