Quicksilver Mercruiser throttle safety switch. I need to access the Neutral safety switch in the throttle quadrant on a friends boat. It is acting up intermittently causing a great deal of worry.

SOURCE: neutral safety switch

It is located on the side of the transmission, follow the shift cable down to it you will recognize it because it has a electrical wire comming off it and either a shift lever or shift cable going to it.

I have a 92 bass tracker with a 40 Johnson I was wondering how to bypass the safety switch not the neutral switch

You need to open the control box , find the back of the safety switch and unplug the the bullet ( quick disconnect). This disables the safety switch . It should be avoided and replaced with a new one if it is defective . If your trying to figure out why your boat will not start. 9 out of 10 times your shifter cables are stretched and your not actually in neutral but part way in gear. This cuts the power to the starter. Readjust

Anyone ever have issues with a Honda outboard shifter shorting out and shutting down engine when you push the throttle forward past trolling speed?

It seems like you may be experiencing a short in the neutral switch of your Honda outboard motor. This issue could be causing the engine to shut down when you push the throttle past trolling speed. If you're able to manually run the engine without the shifter and it runs full tilt, this could further support the possibility of a short in the neutral switch. You may want to have the switch inspected and repaired or replaced by a qualified mechanic to solve the issue.

Just bought boat & prop will not in gage all the time

put your motor on the garden hose after you remove the propeller (you don't want to step into a spinning blade). remove the cover and start the motor.

Have some one shift the motor (without engaging the throttle).. This will show you which cable is the shift cable.Disconnect the shifter, and while it's running, shift it full forward and full reverse to fin the halfway point. Next return the control box to neutral and adjust the connector. Start it up and see if the control box will shift the gear box as far as you did by hand. If not you need to take the control box apart and move the cable anchor so you get more movement. Get a repair book and take pictures as the guts of a control box can be VERY confusing.

When we put boat in reverse in makes a banging noise.

If its a mercruiser 3.0 liter 4 cylinder motor, they are an old block design and will give a pretty healthy clunk when dropped into reverse. Especially if you are shifting from forward to reverse without stopping. Let the throttle hang in neutral for a minute before shifting into reverse.
