And finally the last day it made the crunchy noise and didn't start and then when I pushed the button again, it was dead no noise no nothing. Opened the control panel and tested the push start switch for conductivity, and it registered fine. Not sure how much farther I can go with the AC on as required for further tests...
You may want to check and see if the belt that drives te drum came off or broke. if so replacing it is not to bad of a job to do. you can even google how to replace it, if thats the problem. cause it does sound like it was a mechanical problem
Sounds like the thermal fuse has blown. it's down at the bottom by the blower wheel assembly. The grinding noise that you are hearing could be something down inside the blower assembly sometimes screws coins Etc get caught down in there. if that's not the case check to see if the belt Has Broken because that will release the idler pulley and there's a safety switch on that that will not let the dryer run without the belt on

Problem resolved. Although the membrane control panel passed the diagnostic test, it was defective. Probably a low voltage conductor went to ground, allowing the buttons to operate but throwing the control board into error mode.

What you describe is either a failed evenheat board or a failed motor relay.
Please post the complete model number from the machine and I can help you narrow it down. There should be a wiring diagram inside the console with voltage checks also.
Thanks/Mike

check and see if you have 220 volts to your dryer using a volt / ohm meter find the cord and remove cover take meter and go across (1 test lead on left and one on right) side of cord there should be 220 volts.check this and get back to me. if no 220v trip breaker back and forth and try again

The motor is weak and needs replaced, don't hold the start button too long or you may smoke the motor's thermal protection and it could get smokey and stinky. Make sure you can get the blower wheel off before you make a run for parts, sometimes you have to break them off the shaft. : (
