If so, try to tighten down (fix firmly in place) the wire mesh that protects the speakers, if it's loose, it will vibrate and cause distortion in the sound.
I once had to repair a portasound which sounded really crappy when a group of keys was struck at high volume, and it would only calm down when i fixed the speaker mesh so that it didn't vibrate with loud sounds.
You may want to put some rubber or similar into the groove where the mesh edge fits in to prevent it from vibrating (i solved mine just by tightening up the mesh strips where they protrude into the housing).
If this doesn't help, then it's something else (possibly a bad or dirty connector contact or a bad solder contact).
You can connect a console cable to the console port and login using a freeware terminal emulation app such as Tera Term Pro. The default password is: Symbol

Hi! You can use the mesh on any shape. First you make your circle with the shape tool and then get your mesh tool and click inside the shape. Each time you click it will add more lines to the mesh. Then you can use your direct select tool (the white arrow) to select each point and change the color. The point's color is bounded by the lines around it so you can also use the direct select tool to move points around or change the shape of lines by moving the "handles" you see when you click on a point.
Once you start playing with mesh it can be very fun!
http://www.symbol.com/ is who you should goto since it is a enterprise device. Not many people have the dev kits for these devices.
I only have experience with mc9000. I know when it refuses scan (or activate) is has to do with the software being used to communicate with the scanner itself. Re flashing the device usually fixes it.
