Existing RAM is not recognised when I add new 1GB to free slot

According to specs, your computer can use up to 4Gb of memory. You will need to open the case and see what is currently installed. You should have 4 memory slots and probably it came configured with 2 512Mb memory sticks. You could add 2 more sticks of 1Gb each bringing your total up to 3Gb, but my suggestion would be to remove the existing memory modules and install 4 matching 1Gb modules. You must use DDR2 PC2-5300, DDR2 (non-ECC) type memory and the best results will be achieved by using all matching modules.

The CF29 comes in two basic flavors:
#1: With 256MB RAM and DDR Ram with One open slot.
So add a 1GB DDR RAM (PC-2700) DDR 333 and
the maximum RAM is now 1.2GB

#2: With 512MB RAM and DDR2 Ram with One open slot.
So add a 1GB DDR2 RAM (PC2-5300) and the
maximum RAM is now 1.5GB.

This is my experience and very frustrating to find out the
hard way that the CF29 does not support a 2GB DDR2
RAM Module.

You can only add 1gb per slot Because the mb does not supports a bigger module.
This ram type does come as 1 gb module.
The 667 mhz and 800 mhz is the Mhz speed for the ram module.
Your mainboard supports this but it will only run the current front side bus speed as the mainboard supports.
This means that the new ram will only run 533/400 mhz as the mb supports.

1) On the motherboard the Blue ram memory slot that is closest to the copper heatsink, is ram memory Slot 1.
Also known as DIMM 1.

Ram memory ALWAYS has to be in this ram memory slot.
The Processor reads ram memory Slot 1 first.

2) The Blue ram memory slots are Slot 1 (DIMM 1), and Slot 3.
(DIMM 3)
The Black ram memory slots are Slot 2 (DIMM 2), and Slot 4.
(DIMM 4)

To run Dual Channel ram memory, means there are two LIKE ram memory modules ('Stick'), and they are installed in the SAME channel.

This would mean to alike ram memory modules, in both Blue ram memory slots, or both Black ram memory slots.

Since the ram memory modules need to be alike, they are generally purchased from the same manufacturer, and are the same kind.

Running ram memory in a dual channel configuration, is supposed to increase ram memory 'speed', up to 30 percent.

This is Baloney!
May look good on paper, but in actual use in the field it's cr@p.
Actual performance increase is more like 1 to 2 percent.
This has been proven by Tom's Hardware, and many, many motherboards, ram memory, Processors, etc.

So you have 2GB of DDR2 Sdram, huh?
Is it just one 'stick' of ram memory, or are you referring to two 1GB sticks?

If the above holds true install them in Slot 1 and Slot 3.

If not, and it is a 2GB stick of ram memory, be sure it is installed in Slot 1 (DIMM 1)
Install the 1GB stick in Slot 2.

It isn't the same as the 2GB stick.
It is 1GB.
Does NOT go in a dual channel configuration.

(Catching all this? There is NO dual channel ram memory!

It is ram memory that is -> ALIKE, and used in a -> dual channel configuration.
Used in two separate ram memory slots, that support the dual channel configuration.

Sold with the advertising scheme of 'Dual Channel', but really just means the two ram memory modules, (Or four), are -> alike.

1) Same Voltage used
2) Same Ram Timings
3) Same Chip Configuration
4) Same size in amount
5) Same frequency rate ('Speed')

With ram memory in a dual channel configuration, the ram memory modules team up on the task.)

RAM is faulty or not compatible with your MOtherboard, go through your Mobo manual and check once the purchased RAM at some other machine.

Each memory slot can hold DDR2 PC2-5300 with a maximum of 1GB per slot.*
*Not to exceed manufacturer supported memory.
Although the memory can be installed one module at a time, the best performance comes from using matched pairs of modules.When using PC2-5300 parts the maximum memory is 2GB. When using PC2-4200 the maximum is 4GB.

Is the 1Gb RAM you purchase the same make and speed as the original? If not, they may not be compatible with each other or the new RAM module may be faulty.
Try removing the RAM from slot 1 and insert the new 1Gb RAM module in slot and boot up your laptop to test the new 1GB RAM module.
Installing a single 2Gb RAM module should work.

I don't know your model laptop, but most laptops have one or two memory slots on the bottom of the laptop behind a panel. Remove the panel to reveal the RAM slot/s.
When installing RAM, say 1Gb when there is two 256Mb RAM modules, then you need to replace the existing RAM with two 512Mb RAM modules. Make sure the new RAM is the same speed as the original RAM or faster RAM.

I had the same issue on this board where it came with a Samsung 512 MB 533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2 DIMM. I put in a 1 GB Kingston with the same specs (533 MHz PC2-4200 DDR2) and it would not recongize the Samsung anymore with the system reading as 1 GB of RAM instead of 1.5 GB. Tried every configuration and would only see the Kingston. It would only see the Samsung if I pulled out the Kingston regarless of the slots I use. So, I just bought the exact same make/model of Kingston and it recognized that fine and the system now has 2 GB of memory (max this board allows). And, I had already installed the latest BIOS for this board from Intel before doing all this so wasn't an old BIOS. I'm figuring the board didn't like something about the Samsung memory (speed, module configuration, etc.) that made it not play nice with the Kingston. If interested I bought the DM8400A/1G Kingston modules. And, this board appears not to support dual channel memory. Only has channel A, slots 0 and 1, and I read need two channels to support dual channel (seems obvious). Boards that supports dual channel memory normally have 4 memory slots, two for channel A and two for channel B, then put in matching modules in slot 0 for channel A and B and have dual channel memory access. And if want more ram, then matching modules in slot 1 for channel A and B.

the 1gb memory modules need to be low-density ie chips on both sides. the motherboard can only recognise 512mb on each side of the memory module.
