SOURCE: Black line running horizontally across TV screen

A line on an LCD, either horizontal or vertical usually means the video driver board is defective or the screen is defective, does it show up as black even on a dark screen? That means a line of LCD "shutter"s is not working and there is a problem that cant be fixed by a reboot or channel change. Bummer.

Video just reduced to a tiny horizontal line across the screen. sound is fine, what could be the problem? jvc tv model av-32720

You have a bad vertical IC at its worse or one that may need resoldered. Be sure to check the grounds on this IC and check for rings around the pins. And you can bet in the immediate area you have bad capacitors that created a hot vertical IC. This will cause the Vertical IC to break down!

TV: bright line across black screen for several hours.

vertical output ic needs to be resoldered. careful leaving that bright line displayed on the screen as this will cause a permanent phosphor burn into the tube. this can not be corrected once burned unless you replace the tube. mch

Horizontal lines across the top of the screen

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your described problem is indicative of a failing or near end of life capacitor in the vertical section. The capacitor (often called pump capacitor) would be in the neighborhood of 100uF 35V and physically near the vertical IC. In some JVC models, the vertical IC would be an LA7838 or LA78041 usually a single inline package on a heat sink.

Cost wise, the capacitor is relatively cheap a dollar or less. What would be more challenging is getting access underneath the PCB to de-solder and solder in the replacement.

Pls post back result(s). Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.

White horzontal lines on the top of screen

Typical symptom of a faulty screen voltage capacitor. You'd need a schematic to locate the cap and then change it out.

Those are called retrace lines. The electron beam has to go back to the beginning of the screen as part of its raster scan. Normally it is turned down so that it can't be seen. There is a little adjustment knob on the high-voltage flyback transformer called "screen" that will hopefully adjust this for you. If that doesn't work it is an indication that the high voltage circuit is dying.
