How to install latch and spring in microwave door

I have a sharp carousel R-1610 model microwave and the door will not stay closed. I ordered a new latch and spring but cannot find the owner's manual to know how they are to be put in place.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You need to know where the 'catches' are inside the choke cover on the door to remove it carefully without breaking anything or marring the cover. You might get inside and find that the post for mounting the return spring has broken and that is part of the outer door panel.

SOURCE: Sharp Carousel Microwave door latch stopped working door won't stay closed

Microwavesvc, that's what I've had happen with my sharp also, I carved a hook out of a piece of plastic and then epoxied it in, and haven't had any more problems with that.

Another problem I've had with the sharp (that just reoccured, I'm trying to figure it out) is that the micro-switches that the door latch push have gone bad. Originally just one went bad and I replaced it, now the micro has the light and fan on, and won't recognize being closed...

How can we fix the door of our Sharp Carousel Convection Microwave Oven Model R-9X56?

This appears to be an Australian model and these are the only spares I can find. They do sell the latches. If the hinges are damaged and causing this, you will feel movement. Looks like it is time for a new one.

Door does not stay closed

If you gently push up on the door latch heads (hook-like devices sticking out of the door) there should be spring tension. If they just flop right up, the spring is off inside.

Normally the problem is not the spring, but a broken spring mounting tab on the door latch head (hook) assembly or the inner door panel.

If it's the door panel, it's usually easier and cheaper to use epoxy and some kind of hardware to fashion a new spring mount.

The door latch head (hook) is easy to replace or repair if that's the issue.

The service manual for the R-408LS (the model you posted it under) is here.

You can order parts from the Sears Parts Direct Web site.

Samsung microwave #SMH1611B door won't close

If it has the "double hook" type latch on the door, see if the hooks slide up and down. They should be spring loaded,if not,the spring attachment point inside the door may have broken off(my Sharp Carousel did this).I pryed the plastic door trim loose, and reattached the spring by using one of the slots inside to hold a metal wire clip(modified with needle-nose pliers) to hook the spring onto.Your door's design may be a little different, but a similar solution will probably be apparent after you get in there.

We have an old Sharp Carousel R-1440 that works great, except for the door latch broke (i.e. doesn't work at all now). Can we replace just the door?
