Apple iPod Nano devices are using itunes.
Every purchase or Apple iPod unit are given a disc which to install iTunes in your Computer.

First, you need a computer with an internet connection.
Next, you need to have some type of music library system on that computer. For sake of simplicity, let's use iTunes. To get iTunes, you need to go to http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and follow the directions for installing it.
Next, you need to put songs into that library. If you have songs on your computer, there are tools within iTunes that find those songs and put them in iTunes. You can also put CD's into your cd-drive and load them into iTunes.
Next, you will need to connect your iPod to your computer. iTunes should recognize that it's connected to your computer and show it in the devices list in iTunes. At that point you can click on songs and drag them to the iPod on your computer screen.
Connect an iPod nano to your computer, select it in the iTunes sidebar and click the Music tab. Click on any song and drag it to the left sidebar dissertation writing to drag it to an iPod nano icon at the top of the sidebar.

Click "Sync" to add your songs.

Use iTunes to buy and transfer the songs to your iPod. Or if you have a file sharing network like Limewire or something like that, locate the folder the songs save to and drag them to your iPod.
Go to media player, create playlist. Then sync device. Now drag songs from your playlist to the list on the right. After list is created, hit sync or transfer.
You can also open up you music folder, then go and to my computer, find ipod folder and drag songs from music folder to ipod.

Hi! Congrats for your ipod nano. Use latest version of iTunes available on http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/. Install it and then connect your ipod with the pc. Hope this solves your concern.

The Ipod or the USB cable may be defective.
Try first connecting the Ipod to a different computer to test it, or using a different data cable.
If Ipod works, then do the following.
Unplug computer power cable, and if it is a laptop or a macbook also remove battery for ten minutes. This will get rid of elecrostatic charges on USB connectors.
If that does not work try reinstalling Itunes, this will synch the Ipod again with the computer.
