SOURCE: Freezer left open and now won't work

Try to unplug the unit from the wall and let it sit for a few minutes then plug back in. May reset the door alarm lock out. Also, moisture in the air can be drawn in and freeze up the whole thing. That means turning it off with doors open for about 36 hours... Moisture is a killer in a freezer, freezes and blocks up every air circulation vent, etc.

SOURCE: Viking freezer frost build-up

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
  • if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

After looking at some advice from others I turned the internal dial to the OFF position, then turned it back to 6 or 7, and left it for 20 minutes, and it is now freezing again.

If your fridge is left open over night and it wasnt closed till morning and the alarm light does stop flashing when it is closed what does that mean?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

FYI... The door alarm will sound anytime the door is left open for more than 4 minutes.

Per your post... What it means your refrigerator is working normally.

However... there is the possibility of having excess ice build up on the evaporator coils from the door being open all night. If the freezer section starts warming up due to poor airflow you may have to do a manual defrost. You would first notice the lack of ice production or soft ice cream if there were air flow problems due to excess ice on the evaporator coils.

To do a manual defrost all you do is:
1. Unplug the unit
2. Remove freezer contents
3. Use a fan directed at the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours (makes a water mess)
4. Reload the freezer
5. Plug in the refrigerator

Everything should be back to normal in just over 4 hours except ice production that can take up to 8 hours.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

check to see if the evaporator coil is frozen up, if so you can defrost with hot water.be sure to turn power off and not spray directly into fans.

We left the freezer door open all night by accident two days ago

I turned the fridge side off on mine, and left it overnight (last night!). This morning there is frozen stuff in the freezer. I think the compressor motor just needed ALOT of time to cool down b4 it would work properly again

No cold fridge

Open the freezer and listen for the evaporator fan. You may have to hold the door switch closed for it to come on. If you dont hear the fan running then you probably need a fan motor or or defrost bimetal depending on the make and model. If the fan is working, look at the back wall of the freezer. If you see a thick coat of frost, you probably have a problem with the defrost system. Also, check to make sure refrigerator light is shutting off when you close the door. A 40 watt bulb will curdle a gallon of milk quickly. Of course, you also want to rule out any possibility that the fridge door was left slightly open over night before you decide to toss it. Please reply back with what you find out. If you need further help, please post the brand and model number so I can give more detailed advise.
