My document has a cover and a table of contents. I want page numbering with one to start on the third page. I did do the page break for the cover and the contents and was able to start the document on page three with the correct number. I don't want any number of the first break or the second but I don't seem to have that option. If I erase the number, the numbers on the entire document delete. The only thing I have been able to do is place i on the first page and ii on the second. Is there a way to have no numbering in section break one and section break two without change the numbering in section break three? Thanks

There are two ways to do this. The first way SOMETIMES works. If you don't have luck, try the second method.

Method 1:

  • Delete the page break between the end of page 2 and page 3
  • Position your cursor at the start of page 3.
  • Click on Insert / Break / Next page
  • Select all the text form page 3 to the end of the document.
  • Click on Insert / Page numbers. UNCHECK "show number on first page"
  • Click on <Format>. Make sure "Start at" is selected and the value is "1". Select <OK>
  • Select <OK>
Method 2:
You need to work with the headers and footers. When you are done, you'll have two different footer sections that are NOT connected.
  • Add a "next page" section break as you did above.
  • Click on View / Header and Footer
  • On the Header and Footer toolbar, Click on the icon for "switch between header and footer"
  • page down to page 3. Click on the "link to previous" icon on the header and footer toolbar
  • Click on Insert / Page numbers. UNCHECK "show number on first page"
  • Click on <Format>. Make sure "Start at" is selected and the value is "1".
For some reason I occasionally have to do this twice to get it to stick but eventually it should work. The key is to make sure you have two separate footer sections; the first section is page 1 and 2 without page numbers then the second section (starting with physical page 3) that has page numbers starting with page 1

Make sure you are using "New pages section breaks" and not just "page breaks".
Within each section you can define the numbering options as follows:
- no numbering;
- all pages numbered;
- all pages numbered except the first page;
- first page numbered but not the other pages.

For your purpose, you need two new page section breaks to create 3 different sections (to create these, go to Page Layout/Layout/ Breaks and click New Page under Section Break).
The first and second sections should have no page numbering; the third section will have page numbering on all its pages (go to Insert / Page Number and choose the position of the page numbers; then, stiil in the page numbers menu, go to Format Page Numbers and type "3" in "Sart in:..." textbox .
If you still have problems check if the header of each section is linked (is set to be equal) to the previous section. If in the bottom of the header (if the page numbers are in the header) or the top of the footer (if the pages number apperars here) thre is a message saying "linked to the previous section", you must unlink it, by clicking on the link to previous botton in the Navigation section of the Ribbon

File or directory corrupted and unreadable

The directory is like a "table of contents" in a printed textbook.

If a child's crayons have been used to overwrite those pages, making them unreadable, then the table of contents cannot be used to locate the starting page-number of a specific chapter. So, one must read through the whole textbook, page-by-page, looking & trying to recognize the start of a chapter, and then the end of the chapter.

Similarly, there exist "file-recovery" computer software programs that do such "linear" reading of the entire ZIP disk, and trying to reconstruct the "file-structure" that was recorded in the "disk-directory".

Search for "file scavenger" software, and give it a try.

Dreamweaver CS3

Import Microsoft Office documents (Windows only) You can insert the full contents of a Microsoft Word or Excel document in a new or existing web page. When you import a Word or Excel document, Dreamweaver receives the converted HTML and inserts it into your web page. The file’s size, after Dreamweaver receives the converted HTML, must be less than 300K.
Instead of importing the entire contents of a file, you can also paste portions of a Word document and preserve the formatting.
Note: If you use Microsoft Office 97, you cannot import the contents of a Word or Excel document; you must insert a link to the document.
  1. Open the web page into which you want to insert the Word or Excel document.
  2. In Design view, do one of the following to select the file:
    • Drag the file from its current location to the page where you want the content to appear.
    • Select File > Import > Word Document or File > Import > Excel Document.
  3. In the Insert Document dialog box, browse to the file you want to add, select any of the formatting options from the Formatting pop-up menu at the bottom of the dialog box, and then click Open. Text Only Inserts unformatted text. If the original text is formatted, all formatting will be removed.
    Text With Structure Inserts text that retains structure, but does not retain basic formatting. For example, you can paste text and retain the structure of paragraphs, lists, and tables, without retaining bold, italics, and other formatting.
    Text With Structure Plus Basic Formatting Inserts both structured and simple HTML-formatted text (e.g., paragraphs and tables, as well as text formatted with the b, i, u, strong, em, hr, abbr, or acronym tag).
    Text With Structure Plus Full Formatting Inserts text that retains all structure, HTML formatting, and CSS styles.
    Clean Up Word Paragraph Spacing Eliminates extra space between paragraphs when you paste your text if you selected Text With Structure or Basic Formatting. The contents of the Word or Excel document appear in your page.

TOC Page Numbers Don't Display in PDFed Document

Apparently Adobe doesn't consider importing pagination data from Word documents to be important enough to code Acrobat to find Microsoft's record of the page numbers and import them properly. I would suggest using Adobe Acrobat 7's page numbering feature, and simply number your pages appropriately, to match your table of contents.
