SOURCE: vtech A5874 answering machine not working & letter A shows.

Somehow the answering machine was clicked off, but the announcement was on. Therefore I could not receive messages, but my recording was still on as if I was receiving incoming messages. I just played with the various on/off switches till it worked. For me, just plain luck.

Answering system doesn't work.

Your system is set to "Announce" mode, where it plays an announcement but does not record a message. You want "Answer" mode, where the system allows the caller to leave a message.

Since you didn't give the model of your VTech system, I can't tell you how to switch modes. Enter the model into the search box at http://www.vtechphones.com/support/general/manuals to download a copy of the manual.

The answering machine is not recording messages left by callers. there is an A showing on the screen instead of the number of messages that used to appear on the screen

Without knowing the model of your VTech answering system I can't give you a definite answer, but apparently you have your system set on announce instead of record. Enter the model of your phone into the search box at

to download a copy of the manual.

Why does a flashing A show up in the answering machine display?

Your machine is in announce mode, where it plays an outgoing message but does not record any incoming messages.
More information about the announce and answer modes, as well as instructions on switching between them, begin on page 26 of the manual.

We have a 5.8 ghz vtech phone with answering machine. where the clock display is - there is an A. what does that mean?

That means your system is set to "announce" mode, where it plays an outgoing announcement but does not record any incoming messages. The alternative is "record" mode, which plays an outgoing message and then records the incoming message.
Since you didn't specify the model of your VTech system, I can only direct you to enter it into the search box here and download a copy of the manual.

I have a VTech Dect 6.0 cordless phone answering machine. I disconnected the power to the answering machine in error. I want to reset the time on the answering machine. How do I do this? My email...

Hi there,From answering your telephonemag-glass_10x10.gif when you are busy or away, to broadcasting a generic message to callers, an answering machine is a key part of your home or office phone system. When the device is working properly, it not only records and playbacks messages, but also informs you of the date and time of the call. If your answering machine is not recording messages, displaying an error code or is presenting another problem, you can reset the device and restore it to a working state.
