Yes but it won't be happy for long. Like any tree it is much better off in the ground, even if its a small section of earth the roots will penetrate far down.
If thats not possible, a sheltered, south facing space with a very, very large might do the job for a while. They are very happy climbing up walls

Make sure it doesn't stand in water, don't give it too much. Moist is OK, but it needs to all drain out. Also, don't let soil cover the top of the seed area. Mulch on top is OK, but not right over the base.
