Try using the channel buttons on the front of the tv to go below channel 1. If this doesn't work you will need the original remote or you could try a different universal remote. You can use an RF modulator, available at walmart or radio shack, to feed the signal through the antenna jack on the back of the set.

On later model Sansui tv's, you can bring up the menu by pushing both volume buttons on the front of the set at the same time. After the menu is on the screen, you can navigate using the channel and volume buttons.
video recorder are recievers only not a video audio transmitters( well if it is a player too maybe a button is to be pressed for auxilary)..
and I am sure it comes with a warranty. apply it to the seller and so they can fix the problem of your unit.
turn on your tv, press and hold tv button, then the on/off button, it will light up then press the power button.and it turns off....hold.
After holding down both for buttons for 3 secs the light on the on/off key turns back on.
Release both keys and the light should stay on.
Now hit the On/off button repeatedly until the tv turns off, when it does hit the stop button to save code.
