You can hook up a standard computer monitor to the typewriter, but it won't recognize color, and sometimes on eBay you can find IBM POS (point of sale) monitors that will work on the typewriter. Do you still have the typewriter?

Check in the area where the printwheel is installed for paper or other debris. If it does the same thing with the printwheel out then it is probably a printwheel sensor.

The platen latch broke on my IBM Wheelwriter 30 typewriter. I found a replacement latch. How do I remove the old one?

If it is the R. latch remove the clip and replace it.
If it is the L. latch there are 2 kinds of attachment for the gear welded or pinned. If ithas a hollow pin it can be driven out, ifit is welded the bend must be ground off and a replacement gear installed.

If the latch is just cracked roll up a piece of paper and nforce it into the "V" this will work very well.

IBM Wheelwriter 3 squeaks.

The squeaking is caused by lack of lubrication on the Platen (roller) bearings..the feed rolls that grip the platen or the linespace mechanism. Have to be careful on too much oil..I just put a drop on a corner of a piece of paper and touch what you want to oil..it will **** the oil right off the paper. a light oil like gun or sewing machine oil.
Hope this helps

Wheelwriter 3500 only printing top half of letters

Sounds like the platen is not fully seated in the side frames, align the black latches with the frames and press firmly on both sides of the platen. the latches do occasionally crack in witch case you may need a platen replacement.
