Windows Vista: How to enable or disable the Sidebar

The Windows Sidebar, introduced with Windows Vista, is a way to have one-click access to websites and widgets right from your desktop. Some people love the Sidebar and some people hate it. Whichever camp you happen to fall in, enabling or disabling the Sidebar is a painless process.

To disable the Sidebar:

1. Right click on the Sidebar icon in the notification area (a computer screen with different colored blocks on its right side).
2. Select Exit from the menu.
3. If a confirmation window appears, click Exit Sidebar.

To enable the Sidebar:

1. Click the Vista orb and type "sidebar" into the Search bar.
2. From the search results, select Windows Sidebar. (If Windows Sidebar is the highlighted item, you can just hit Enter.)
3. The Sidebar will appear, in the same place and with the same widgets as the last time you used it.

An alternate way to enable the Sidebar:

1.Click the Vista orb.
2. Select All Programs.
3. Select Accessories.
4. Select Windows Sidebar.

To configure the Sidebar to load automatically every time you start your computer:

1. If it's not already enabled, enable the Sidebar (using either of the methods described above).
2. Right click on the Sidebar icon in the notification area.
3. Select Properties.
4. Put a check mark in the box next to "Start Sidebar when Windows starts."
5. Click either OK or Apply.

If you have the Sidebar set to load automatically and then you disable it, it will still run every time you start your computer, unless you remove the check mark next to that option in the Sidebar properties.

How do i remove the sidebar

vista
On the Windows desktop, mouse over the sidebar and right-click on the search gadget you want to remove.

Click on "Close Gadget." The search function is now gone from the sidebar; however, the search gadget is still installed on your computer for future use if you ever decide to re-add the item to your sidebar.
To completely remove the sidebar search gadget from your entire computer, follow the next steps.
Right-click on the Windows sidebar.
Click on "Add Gadgets" to open a window containing all sidebar gadgets installed on your PC, including the search gadget.

Right-click on the sidebar search gadget you want to remove, and click to select "Uninstall."
Click "Uninstall" again when a Windows notification pops up, asking you to confirm the uninstall process.
After you click, the program will automatically be removed from your PC and it will no longer appear on the listing of available sidebar gadgets for Vista

windows 7

Click "Start."

Click "Control Panel."

Double-click "Windows Sidebar."

Remove the check from the box next to "Start Sidebar when Windows Starts."

Click "Save." Now, the next time you load your computer Windows Sidebar will not start.

hope this helps

Hii, my L6 KM555R lost its Short cut bar at the bottom on the main menu, anyone know how to help, please and Thankss :)

Most times, it's just hidden! :) Move your mouse to the bottom center of the screen- (or to the right center, or left center) and see if it pops up... if it does, control click on the separator bar thing near the trash can, and click "turn autohide off." That should fix it!

How do I get the little temperature icon to stay on my task bar? I used ot have it, but it is gone now!

Is it a detached Weather gadget from your Windows Sidebar? If you have the Windows Sidebar icon on your Notification area (system tray), right click on it then click "Open"(or Bring gadget to front). Your Sidebar should appear on the Desktop. If you don't have the Temperature gadget showing click on the "+" sign on the top of the sidebar. Double click on the Weather gadget. Then you can drag it to a location you want on the Desktop (or you can right click > Detache from Sidebar). To change the current temperature location, right click > Options, type your location on the "Search for location" box.

( OR )

If it is NOT a 3rd party gadget that you downloaded from the web, then just click the + sign at the top of the sidebar ( sometimes it's on the side ), a popup box will open up, showing a list of gadgets. Tempwerature shold be there.
Right click at it > click Add.
It will re-appear at the sidebar.

The taskbar disppears. I have it locked so that it should always be on top of everything else but when it goes into hibernation and it restarted it disappears.

I'm had the same problem with my system. if the 'Start' button is still visible, so you can right-click that, select 'Properties' and change the TaskBar settings.select the 'Autohide the Taskbar' and applying that change will result in the Taskbar appearing again (at least when the mouse pointer is positioned by the Taskbar).

if the above one does not work a simple solution that will work:

1. Hit CTRL+ESC to show the Start menu.
2. Right click the menu at the bottom for Properties.
3. Select the Taskbar tab.
4. Check Autohide Taskbar and click the apply button.
5. Uncheck Autohide Taskbar and click the apply button once more.

Your taskbar should reappear when you've completed these 5 steps.

Please give this a try before messing with registry or recovering your machine!

If the taskbar does not show up when you press CTRL+ESC then explorer.exe may not be running. To correct this press CTRL+SHIFT+ESC which will bring up the task manager. Click File, New. Find explorer.exe and open it.

Go into Task Manager. Find explorer.exe and end the process. Restart explorer.exe. If your taskbar magically reappears, you've found the issue. Here are some other symptoms:

After a Windows Vista-based computer has been running for an extended period of time, the desktop screen may stop updating correctly. For example, you may experience any of the following symptoms: • Parts of the screen may go black. • Parts of the screen may become transparent. • The toolbar may disappear. • The toolbar may appear at the top of the screen instead of at the bottom of the screen.
If you add the GDI Objects column for the Explorer.exe process in the Task Manager console, you see that the GDI Objects column has reached the maximal number that is defined in the GDIProcessHandleQuota registry entry.

I turned on my PC one day, and sidebar just decided not to go. I dont know why or how to fix the problem. I went to do a system restore, but noticed i had no system restore points set.....can anybody help...

Having a sidebar problem would indicate you're using Windows Vista, so I'm going to go from there. Microsoft has had a lot of problems with the sidebar feature, and has dropped it in Windows 7. I strongly recommend that you turn it off and leave it off. You can get things you need for your desktop without using the sidebar.

As far as the restore points go, you should have several set up automatically, but since you don't do the following:

Click on the start button, then find "Computer" (or My Computer) in the right column. RIGHT click on Computer, then left click on Properties. This brings up the System window. Select System Protection from the column on the left side of the window (Task List). Click the CREATE button near the bottom of this window to create a restore point.

Give the Restore Point a unique name of your choosing.

Of course this won't help you now, so I would shut off the Sidebar and try to live without it. Otherwise, go to the Control Panel, find the sidebar icon and click it. Set it to open the sidebar when you start Windows. You may need to reset your preferences to get it back to what you wanted.

If this doesn't work, you probably have some type of Malware or virus on your system. The best way to check for this is to go to the following web page: www.malwarebytes.org - and download the program using the blue button. Install it (click RUN) and update it, then let it run a scan (follow the instructions). Once it's done, restart your system and see if it's fixed.

Usually, restoring your system for a sidebar problem really isn't a useful or good way to resolve the issue. For one thing, on some systems, the sidebar seems to randomly decide not to work, and on others it seems to cause other system problems. I've seen very few Vista systems that did not improve with the sidebar feature shut off.

It's important with Vista to be very particular about keeping the Malware off the system, and keeping the registry clean. Using CCleaner.exe is a good way to do this. Clean the registry at least once a week, and do NOT defrag more than two times a year. Vista seems to not appreciate too much defragging. Keeping your system healthy and shutting off the sidebar are two of the best solutions for most Vista problems. Finally, I recommend you upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as possible. Even the RC-1 is better than Vista.
