It is related to bios enabled computrace models. It has happened twice to my dell 1525 I bought it 12/08. The software used to image your recovery partition is incompatible with the two tiny hidden partitions computrace uses. Computrace gets corrupted and shuts you down like you stole the laptop through no fault of your own. All of you data is still there so don't worry. dell inspiration 1150 laptop - smile.gif

According to dell, you have to remove the hard drive, download your correct bios from their site using another computer of course, and while the hardrive is still removed, flash the new bios and then reinstall the hardrive and it should work fine with all your data intact.

I found this tech update at dell's website this problem goes back to 2005 but the most recent update was dec. 2008 and includes many laptops including the 1500 series.

Computrace freaked out and completely disabled your system. You can send it back or follow the instructions in the update if you are out of warranty.

I am a graphic designer so I needed to finish a project, so I did this to get it running again, backed up my data, and sent my laptop back for a replacement.

I have included part of the update and the Dell web link for you below.

Certain Dell™ Portable Systems Display a Black Screen with a Flashing Cursor when Booting from the Hard Drive

This issue only occurs on Dell portable systems that shipped after Oct. 31, 2005, and have the following configuration:

  • The CompuTrace BIOS feature is supported and has been set to Activate.
  • A system account has been created, and the laptop is registered with Absolute Software.
  • The Altiris Backup and Restore application for local client has been installed.
Affected systems manifest the following symptoms:
  • When the system is powered on, it does not complete the boot process, and the only indication that a problem has occurred is a black screen with a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the display.
  • The system cannot boot from any media as long as the hard drive is attached. The only way to boot to other media is to remove the hard drive from the system.
Altiris Backup and Recovery software uses an atypical mechanism to hide a partition within the system volume. This mechanism involves hiding valid data relating to the Altiris Backup and Recovery software in marked blocks that the operating system is designed to ignore. The installation process for Altiris also leaves table entries that store directory information for NTFS. These entries are formatted differently than those normally observed on an NTFS-formatted partition. These changes were not anticipated, and we are not aware of any other product that uses the file system in such a manner.

I hope this helps.

I have a dell mini 1012 and when I turn it on getting black screen no dell logo, no beeps, I know it boots into OS but can not see anything on screen. Tried fix for corrupt hibernation file. Holding function key and power button at same time, this is for Windows 7 but I am running Ubuntu 10.10, tried to drain flea power by removing battery and AC adapter holding power button for 30 secs. Same thing, no dell logo just black screen. Could it be a loose LCD connector or video card is crapped out? Any ideals? I have not taking apart yet, may check LCD connectors or possiby reseat RAM memory I have other RAM I can try, I have not been able to find any information/help for this issue so far.

Hi!

black screen at startup? do you still see the Dell logo at startup? try pressing Fn+F8 at the same time at the black screen and see if it works. Or else, try a working external monitor and check if its a OS problem or a screen problem. You can also run a diagnostic test by holding down the Fn key while its off and then press the power button while still pressing on the function key to check if you will still see the diagnostic test for the LCD.

Go into your device manager and disable the device, and then reboot. That may give the device a chance to reset itself through windows

Dell Inspiron 1501

If the laptop keeps working, and you can use it on an external screen, then it is likely an hardware fault.

First perform a complete system recovery, like probably already instructed by the Dell support helpdesk. This will practically exclude the possibility of a driver or system problem.

If the problem is hardware , then you may have a faulty inverter board , a bad LCD display/LCD ribbon connection, or a faulty video adapter (integrated with motherboard).

If the problem is the inverter, then the screen will go dark, and the laptop will keep working on external display. This is probably your case.

If the problem is LCD display or ribbon cable, then the display will be blank with light on , and the laptop will keep working on external monitor.

Fault concerning video adapter usually cause the the system not to work at all, and it is uncommon under conditions described.

Boot problem on inspiron 1150

Try connecting it to an external monitor.
When you do, as soon as you press the power button to turn on the laptop, close the laptop lid - as this forces the laptop to display on an external monitor.
If this works, then it means the laptop screen is bad.
If it doesn't, the most likely cause would be that the laptop video card went bad.
For a while, some older Dell laptops with high-end nVidia graphics cards tended to die suddenly.

Screen black after turning on

You probably need a new inverter.

This will explain inverters and what they do:

Thats more for your information than to walk you through replacing it, most shops will do it relatively cheap.

You may check power settings in control panel and see if somehow the settings for your screen are set to turn off or the power settings program has been corrupted for some reasons.
