Cub cadet 44 inch 20 HP kohler engine. Dies when brake released. By passed seat switch, still does same thing.

While seat occupied, the safety relay is energized and opens the seat to PTO switch and Brake switch kill circuits.

Check the operation of the safety relay.

With engine off and key in RUN position you should hear the relay click when you sit in the seat (remove your seat switch bypass and reconnect seat switch).

Where is the seat switch located on a scotts j.d. 17.542 lawn mower

Safety switches are usually located under the vinyl of the seat. If you press down with your hand you should able to feel it. Probably in the center of the seat.

Cub cadet trouble shooting

Seat switch on my GT1554 only stops starting/running when not sitting in seat. Circuit open when on seat, closed when off seat. If you unplug one or both of the wires (opening circuit), you'll bypass this safety feature.

Engine dies when brake is released.

You have a problem with a safety interlock. I'm betting it's the operator presence safety seat switch. To check if it is the seat switch:
  1. Unplug the seat switch.
  2. Jumper the seat switch wiring harness plug receptacles.
  3. Start your tractor & release the brake. If the tractor stays running, replace the seat switch.

Mower cranks up but cuts off when put in gear

Hi, the seat switch is most likely faulty. You should be able to bypass it under the seat temporarily to prove that it is the problem. If so I suggest replacing the switch. Hope this helps, regards Phil.

Craftsman 5000 stalls when releasing brake when put in gear

The most likely suspect would be a bad seat switch or the plug to it has come off.To test it if the plug is still on the seat switch just stick a small piece of wire with then ends bared into each connector to "jump" the seat switch then if you can now let off the brake without it quiting the you know that you need to get one.

Garden tractor engine shuts off

Sounds like the operator present seat switch is not working. You can run the motor out of the seat, but not with the blades engaged. You didn't list what model, but usually hte seat switch is connected to the negative side of the battery, and grounds out the magneto, so you can't test it to ground. Put your tester on 12+ battery, and then to both sides of the seat switch. There is usually 4 terminals on seat switch. Some moodels have grey wires for the mageneto circuit, you can tell by whatever color also goes to the clutch switch too.
