Pump is running, but not pulling water, what could be the cause?

Try priming it water at the filter. Make sure that the filter o ring is sealing under the cap. Make sure there is enough water in the pool to enter the suction line and that it is not restricted.

when the trigger for the wand is not pulled , there is a pressure relief valve that bypasses the water in the pump and so there is no pressure until the trigger is pulled again.
with the pump getting hot and not being able to pull the motor to restart, it indicates that that pressure relief valve has jammed ( faulty ) and the pump is running at full pressure all the time
That will heat the pump and stop the engine from restarting
That valve is where I would start looking for a problem

You have 3 areas to check. Drain hose, water pump and hot/cold water valves. Any of those 3 areas can be the cause. Most often leaks are caused by loose hoses, but neptunes use a plastic water pump that can clog and lose bearing water seals as well. Try the easy options first, then if those solutions don't point to the cause, remove the front cover and check the water pump for moisture.

Try pulling your hoses from the water one at a time with the pump running. You will hear air pulling into the system if you have a bad hose. you will need to replace these as nessary. This sounds like the most common cause of this. Also it could be a bad skimmer or plumbing at your pump. These are harder to check and may need a professionl. Good luck
