Question about Generac Guardian 100 Amp Transfer Switch NEMA 3R

Suddenly in power outage and engine starts auto., NO inside power

9-3-09 -- A very recent problem with a 3 year old new house installation of 16kW Generac with 100A exterior transfer switch feeding seperate inside distribution box is, when power goes off, while the generator NG engine starts up automatically, no power in house. The transfer switch does NOT trip automatically as previously. When I trip manually with yellow lever, while engine continues to run, still NO electricity. Thruout this time, the green LED remains flashing "utility not sensed" AND the 65A circuit breaker on control panel in unit remains ON. All breakers have been switched on and off just to be sure OK. When main power is restored, generator shuts itself down in <60 secs. Problem continues when power outage is simulated by tripping main breaker. All oil, filter and plug changes faithfully made on yearly basis. Does it sound like transfer switch or controls or ? Your comments, please? ****

Good question. While there is NO power to distribution panel inside the house when engine is running, even when I manually operated transfer switch. I don't know how to determine IF the generator itself is operating? There are no red LED's flashing when engine is running except the green flashing LED that apparently just means utility is not sensed. The is no convenience outlet built into unit itself. Do you have any ideas on how to determine if generator is functioning, please?

I have a 16kW Generac Guardian Generator with a 200 amp house service RTS panel (installed 2007). Last night the power went out and the generator started but the unit did not switch to use generator

The problem with the repair service is another matter. Emergency generator and it's switch gear are there for emergency purposes. It has to be exercised periodically. The switch gear should have a toggle switch to simulate a power outage. the switch cuts power to the sensor sensing power from the utility company. This tells the switch gear that power was lost, start the engine and switch over to generator power. Run for a period where engine reached running temperature and switch back to stand by to shut down. Do this periodically, and be grateful the event was not a disaster. Think of your back up electrical system as the spare tire of your car and similar equipment and enjoy your investment. Good people brings you happiness, bad people brings you experience !.

It is always good to install a large enough wire where the maximum load can be drawn plus a little extra for safety. 7 gauge wire will do, if it was mine I would use 6 gauge wire. If the length is over 20 feet but not longer than 80 feet go to the next larger size wire.

Sounds like the electritian wired something wrong. Control wiring for that generator should be:
N1 and N2 = 240 vac utility input
Wire 0 = ground
Wire 194 (15B) = + battery
wire 23 = transfer signal

Generac 4456 does not start on power loss

I install and work on these everyday. If you hooked up the transfer switch you probable have a control wire wrong. check the utility power sense wire. That lets it no when to start in auto. it could be a relay or fuses. or a control board.

20KW Guardian Generac does not produce 12 volts to run engine

The problem is that the printed circuit board inside the generator draws a little current from the battery even when the generator is not running. Over the course of a few days this can make the battery weak enough to be unable to get recharged by the built in running charger which results in not enough power to run the electronic governor on the generator. Usually the spark plugs will work even with a fairly low battery.

Most of the Generac generators come with a built in trickle charger that runs off of the transfer switch load terminals. If your built in charger isn't doing the job it's either broken or you have the wrong sort of battery installed in the generator.

Regards,
Carl
