This is because Windows has dropped its support to provide Windows Media Player's built-in DVD codec for Windows 10 and above. To a large extent, Microsoft sees that the market is decreasing needs for a DVD drive, not to mention DVD playback service. They take it for granted that not many users may spend extra money for DVD playback since users could easily watch movies from the internet. In addition, Microsoft does not feel like paying a licensing fee to include DVD codec in the operating system. So users may not be able to play DVD via Windows Media Player.

Solution:
Install DVD codec pack. Download the codec pack from the given link: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx
Step 2: 2: Find a folder on your computer to save the package. And then install it for WMP following the instructions.
Step 3: After installation, insert the DVD and use Windows Media Player to play your DVD disc

Or you can try to download another DVD player program on your PC. You can try Leawo Blu-ray Player, which is a free 4K and region-free player.

SOURCE: cannot play dvds. says my Windows Media Player

You need to install a DVD decoder. The manufacturer of your PC or DVD player should have this software included. There are several you can purchase online such as WinDVD and PowerDVD.

Here Microsoft explains this issue: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/expert/bridgman02april15.mspx

VLC Media Player can play a DVD:
http://files.uberdownloads.com/apps/lps/index.php?product=vlc

It is free but not as user friendly as the DVD Players mentioned above.

Is windows media player able to play dvds? how daes it work? my laptop media can not play dvds.. i m feeling tired of it..

You may need codecs in order to play most DVD videos and other formats like DivX. Use this codec pack here. Select the Media Player Classic as the application while you were asked to provide it. K-Lite After that both of your players are ready to play DVDs (its better to have Media Player 11 in your system for a better experience) Enjoy your movie!

DVD Movie

By default, Windows does not include a DVD decoder (which is what you need to watch DVDs).
If you are using WMP10: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx
If you are using WMP11:
http://savvybytes.com/2006/10/02/playing-dvds-with-windows-media-player-11/

Install the codec and you will be able to watch DVDs!
