Here is one thing to check..may be weird but it happened to my cub cadet..I had the same thing as you state..had power but just dead. Turned out the engine stopped on the top end of the high compression stoke and the starter would not do a thing...I manualy spun the engine in this case turning my dry shaft with a wrench to get it off the compression stroke..once done it started and has been ever since...just one of those unexplained things...Try it good luck..

When I try to start my 60" Ariens rider all I get is a loud clattering sound. I just replaced the battery 2 months ago. What's wrong with my mower?

Joel, Recheck battery to make sure it has good charge >12 v and all battery and starter wiring,plugs,connections are clean,tight and undamaged. If you remove spark plug and engine spins freely from the key, the engine compression release or valve clearance needs adjusted. It is probable the solenoid or starter is faulty, the starter Bendix/drive may be sticking. If you can, give the starter a couple sharp raps with a hammer or bar and then try to start.
Check the attached links,instruction and guides to help diagnose starting issue. Good luck

Car engine will not turn over

If I understand you right, the problem is the engine will not crank, that is turn over when you turn they ignition key to START. Having said that, might it be that the issue is with the starter system. The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. At this point, the ignition switch then provides +12VDC to a starter relay (if the vehicle has got one) or direct to the starting solenoid. The relay is but a remote switch with slightly higher amperage capacity. The starter relay then engages and supplies +12VDC to the staring solenoid. The starting solenoid then performs two (2) functions. It provides the switching action (hundreds amps) from the battery heavy cable to the actual starter motor. The solenoid likewise pushes a small pinion gear along the shaft of the starter motor to engage the ring gear. The ring gear is of course on the edge of the flywheel which in turn is attached to the crankshaft.

Starter system problems could be corrected by:
1. check battery, battery cables and connections;
2. charge the battery if required;
3. clean brushes and guides of brush holders of the starter motor;
4. clean the commutator and commutator segments;
5. check/replace the armature or field coils if determined to be defective;
6. in some extreme cases it could be the drive pinion or the flywheel gear ring is defective.
7. often it is the big switch that the solenoid activates that looses contacts causing no +12V internally to the motor.
8. Most likely would be a defective starter relay or the IGN switch itself. Relative to this, you might try and check the connectors/terminals and electrical joints.

In the picture below, the upper portion is the starter solenoid while the one below it is the actual starter.

Given the amount of work to overhaul a starter, you might consider just replacing it.

So recommended course of action is determine if there is +12VDC at the starter solenoid when IGN switch is turned to START.

Additionally, it is worth to mention that there are some alarm/security systems that does this exactly.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Hi,

Factors that can disable starting the engine are:
1. if automatic transmission, should be in Park or Neutral. In some instances, you may need to move the shift lever a couple of time to trigger the hidden switch;
2. anti-theft/alarm system. You may need to check the connectors, disable or the electronic key and try several times;
3. Starting system - the issue is might be with the starter system. The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. It turns over but doesnt start

Hi,

If I understand you right, the problem is at certain times the engine will not crank, that is turn over when you turn they ignition key to START. And at times it will start and run normally. You also posted that you recently had the IGN switch replaced. If I may ask, what was the reason for the replacement? Additionally, it is highly possible that the new switch may be the reason. You can try using a jumper wire to simulate the staring. If jumping the ST terminal to the BAT and the engine will turn, then you have just verified that indeed, it is the new switch, if not then it is something else.

Having said that, might it be that the issue is with the starter system. The starter system is initiated at the ignition switch when the key is turned to start. Given the amount of work to overhaul a starter, you might consider just replacing it if determined to be the culprit. This page might be informative.
