It is with most computers that if the function key was pressed for a long period of time it would of brought up that icon so try holding the function key for 10 seconds

does it work with headphones plugged in? is there a volume button on the side of the laptop, or using the FN key and a volume icon on the keyboard that can mute the volume?
Usually the sound on the OS is directly tied into the physical sound controls on the laptop. Most new laptops now-a-days have keys called FUNCTION keys which are usually represented by light blue icons on other keys.
Look for the FUNCTION keys associated with the sound (think speakers, +/- etc) You should find some keys somewhere (usually number keys) that have these blue icons, you should also find 1 or 2 FN keys (usually near the left CTRL/ALT keys)
Hold down the FN key and press the MUTE key or the + key several times.
Still nothing? Try changing the volume in windows (double click the speaker icon in the system tray, no speaker icon? is it hidden? expand the system tray by press the little area inside of it.)
STILL nothing? Make sure your sound device is working properly. Easiest way to check this is (VISTA/7) click START and type in Device Manager, (XP right-click MY COMPUTER, then PROPERTIES, then the HARDWARE tab then DEVICE MANAGER button)
Sound controllers has it's own section, if your sound card has an icon next to it try reinstalling the device drivers and rebooting.
STTTIIILLLL nothing? Speakers may be broke or even a BIOS setting (complicated)
Good day. You can try to Hit Fn+F2 and it'll toggle wireless on and off. (Practice it a few times
so you can recognize how the icons in the system tray appear, so you'll
know to switch it back on if you ever disable it by accident.) Hope this info resolve your issue. Have a great day.
The sound card is inside the laptop and is part of the motherboard. This means that you cannot take the sound card out and replace it.
You may need to reinstall the audio drivers for the machine but check first that the volume has not been muted. Look to the bottom right of the screen for an icon that looks like a speaker and click on that and see if it has been muted or just turned down. If there is no speaker icon there it may have disappeared from the system tray. You can use your keyboard to turn the volume up or down and to mute and un-mute it. The keyboard toggles are as follows >>>
To turn the volume up hold down Fn and press the PageUp key. To turn the volume down hold down Fn and press the PageDn key. To mute hold down Fn and press the End key.
It is also a good idea to check in the BIOS to make sure the on-board audio has not been disabled.
If you have ThinkVantage Access Connections running (icon in the system
tray), click on it and select Power On Wireless Radio. Another way is
to press the blue Fn key and the F5 key. (The F5 key should show a
computer with wireless lines coming out of it.)
check your touchpad software, it should have an option for disabling the tap-click. generally this kind of software has an icon located at the system tray. right-click it and look for the setting or options. if you want to disable completly the touchpad hold the function key (Fn) and tap the key that has a drawing that resembles a touchpad. you computer should confirm that.
You don't specify what system are you using. In Windows you have to go to Control Panel, Mouse and Pointing Device properties, and find your touchpad options there, including the scroll areas. If it's not there, chances are there is a separate application, either in Control Panel, or in the Start Menu, for setting up the touchpad. You can also look in the system tray beside the clock - often there's an icon there for the pointing device.
Left click the volume icon in the system tray in windows.
A slider will appear which you can drag up and down to change the volume on the computer.
If the volume icon is not in the system tray, do this:
Go to Start->Control Panel
Pick Sounds and Audio Devices
Open the Volume tab
Tick "Place volume icon in taskbar"
Now you should have an icon in the taskbar.
If you cannot do this, then you do not have the proper sound card drivers installed and you computer will be playing no sound whatsoever, which is unrelated to your question.
