"muddy eyes" I am scanning 35 mm colour transparencies and doing fine, until I hit one slide of a family of six people.  The scan is fine except for the four people seated, who are located around the centre of the slide. On each person, the area around one eye is blurred out and the eye is invisible. Sort of looks muddy... no detail. I don't see any red eye, but I also can't find any reference to red-eye removal in the manual or help files. If I scan at 1200 dpi then more eye area is affected, and sometimes two eyes. At 2400 dpi, only one eye is affected on each person. The two people standing are scanning in just fine. Their faces are near the top edge of the image.

This multi function printer/scanner cannot scan 35mm slides and negatives.
Some flat bed scanners with a lighr scource that shines through 35 mm slides and negatives can scan them.
You will be better off getting a dedicated 35 mm slide/negative scanner.

There are several options but the most practical one is to get a scanner that scans transparencies. They are not cheap but are the most effective. Another option is to project the slides onto a special screen and then photograph them with a digital camera. This can be done with 35 mm negatives as well and then they can be turned into positives with software.

I think the reason you can't find instructions is because (according the Canon Website) this scanner can't do it.
Flatbed scanners that can also scan transparencies have fairly thick lids and usually a power connector going into the lid so that the transpaerncy can be lit from above. The LIDE 700F is the model you need.

Thanks. When you attempt a scan with your backlight setup are you able to instruct the scanner through its settings and options that you are using a transparency backlight at 6300K? If these options are there, what light temperature options do you have besides 6300 or is that the only one. And are your slides in standard tray or in a plastic jacket? A standard tray is a clamshell device where you lay your slides in frames and when done close and snap the clamshell closed.

SOUNDS LIKE A SOFTWARE CONFLICT.BUT IM NOT SURE

The setting should go something like this- Colour reflective Black and white reflective Colour Negative. Colour Transparency. Black and white negative. Some scanners automatically sense and switch to what is loaded - others need setting up. So check thoroughly all the settings in conjunction with the manual[A full manual in PDF format is usually on the software disk. Then come back

To be honest, I have no idea of how you were able to scan larger transparencies in the past. The scanner and its software were never designed to do this and there is no workaround.
