The flywheel key has sheared and it needs to be replaced. Replacing the flywheel key is a fairly straightforward procedure. Otherwise, it will be necessary to take the mower to have someone replace the flywheel key.

Here are some steps to follow to replace the flywheel key on your own (instructions are for a toro 20016 model mower):

  1. block off the blade and driver assembly with a 2x4 to keep it from moving
  2. remove the flywheel nut (regular hand force should be sufficient)
  3. tap the 3 holes on the flywheel (if they aren't already threaded) using 1/4inch 20national tap set
  4. remove the flywheel using a flywheel puller -- a harmonic balancer puller which matches the tecumseh bolt pattern on the flywheel also works using 3 1/4inch thread (20national, 2inch long) bolts with washers
  5. NOTE: (if the blade was removed/reinstalled, tighten the blade to manufacturer's spec of 60lbs) before installing the new flywheel key
  6. remove the sheared flywheel key
  7. clean up the flywheel (wipe off all the dirt and grease)
  8. install the new flywheel key (part 611004 for toro 20016)
  9. install the flywheel (pull the bail brake handle to get the ball-brake inside the flywheel)
  10. tighten the flywheel nut to manufacturer's spec of 37.5lbs
  11. prime the gas bulb, give it a pull and mow away

You will need to replace an aluminum "key" in the flywheel. Whenever you hit something, the key is designed to shear so you don't break something major.

Scag turf tiger hit stump and now have no ignition to start mower

The issue is the flywheel on the crankshaft. There is a woodruff key on the shaft that aligns the flywheel and when you strike something the torque on the flywheel shears or moves the woodruff key and changes the magneto timing. Take the flyweel cover off and you should be able to see the top of the crankshaft and the key etc.

Wont start

If you were cutting long grass it sounds like you may have burnt the motor out. It may have over heated. they are not made to cut long grass. You don't say whether the motor runs but not the blades if this is the case you may have sheared the shear pin in the blade assembly.

I was mowing in thick grass and my ride on mower stopped. If I try to restart I can hear and feel the motor trying but it just wont get going.

You probably hit something unseen. First check under you deck to be sure a stick or something isnt wedged in there. Check your belt and pulleys on top of the deck.
Im tempted to say check the flywheel key or adjust the valve lash.

I hit a metal pipe with my cub cadet zero turn lawn mower today. Now it smokes under the deck when I engage the blades and it is not cutting the grass. Have I ruined my mower?

You'll need to look under the deck w/ the mower not running and see why the blades aren't turning. Most likely something is bent (maybe blade) and hitting something. The smoke is probably from the belt slipping and getting hot.

Son ran over some chain with my Troybilt mower with the HONDA 160CC OHC engine. Since then, the mower cuts off when it gets into higher grass. Problem getting worse , almost like something is loose?

check that the blade disc or carrier is tight and the woodruff key on the pto shaft has not shawn / sheared

check the flywheel key under the starter cup nut

could be sheard and is out of time or is moving when unit starts and stops

a shawn key will not stop it from sparking just wont spark @ correct time , check that pto is not bent

might pay to check camshaft timming as well and check timming belt

here is web site for parts breakdown
http://www.honda-engines-eu.com/en/welcome.html

go to service, spare parts , then select gcv160 from list
then hit search

a engine list will come up

cheers hope it helps

My Toro mower is 7 yrs old. 3 speeds, blade

I've noticed that when the blade get dull it work harder a cutting tall grass. I just put a new blade on mine and now it runs and sounds like a brand new mower. also if the inside of the deck is coated with old grass that makes a differance too

Lots of smoke when I engaged stuck blades - now runs roughly

Most likely what you did was burn one or more spots on the belt. When the blades and belt stop turning, like in tall grass, the engine doesn't stop and will burn flat spots on the belt at the engine pulley. Every time the flat spot hits a pulley, it will jump and can set up a bad vibration. Run your hand around the sides of the belt or take it off and you will feel or see the thin spot(s) on it. Replace belt.

Mower won't start

13 to 15 amps electric or battery operated mower may runs slow when cutting thick grass. also recommended not to cut grass when it's wet & need very sharp blade to do the lawn. may overloading it, cutting grass too thick also draws too much power. check house breaker first.
