Sdvd8441 I have a gateway mx6912 notebook computer with a philips sdvd8441 cd/dvd burner. The computer runs windows xp. I have edited content, but everytime I attempt to burn the content to dvd the system goes through the process, but the disc comes out blank. I have used dvd+ - r's and dvd+ - rw's. I am able to burn music and data cd's without problem. The drive is also able play dvd's. I have attempted to use software programs pinnacle studio 10+, adobe premier elements and roxio easy dvd creator all with the same results. I have an intel duo core multiprocessor. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver. I am at my wits end. Any ideas?

I tried Nero, and I got the same result. I have used several different brands of dvd, and I have the file saved on hard drive. I have tried other projects with same results. I am using dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd+rw's and dvd-rw's.

I have used several different disc copiers from various software companies including nero.

Is DMA enabled for the drive? If it's sharing an IDE channel with another drive (hard drive, for instance) make sure they're not using the same DMA.

You could also try updating the firmware for the drive. The only place I've found that is from a Gateway site - but while it says it's for their laptop, it's firmware for the drive so it should work on any system using this drive. Here's the link:

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=6096

If none of that helps, let me know and I'll try to find something else.

If replacing a Phillips SDVD8431 with a Phillips SDVD8441 do I need to change the driver?

First try this:
Start>Computer RIGHT CLICK on Computer
Properties>Device Manager
Go to DVD/CD-ROM Drives; Locate SDVD8441; Instead of Disable, select UNINSTALL.
Reboot
Allow Windows to rediscover.
You may wish to be online so Windows can download the latest driver for you as part of the re-installation process.
Don't be alarmed if Windows rediscovers your drive as QSI SDW-082k -- that is just another name for the same drive (SDVD8441).

If that doesn't work, try re-installing the firmware. Download it from Gateway at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20535&dscr=Philips%20DVD%20Drive%20Firmware%20Update%20for%20Gateway%20MX6428%20Notebook%20&&uid=30066654&uid=30066662 or Google PhillipsPA49.exe to find another trusted source.

You can use programs like Nero to burn data onto a disc such as a CD-RW. Since you already have a DVD burner you can even use a DVD-RW to burn your data

Desktop Machine Stopped Recognizing CD/DVD drives

Hello. CD and DVD drivers pretty standard these days. Generic even. You can go buy CD and DVD drives all day long and install them and they will come right up in Windows.

My latest was a Blue Ray / DVD by Sony because I wanted to watch and copy Blu Ray content (which I own copies of for sure...)

Anyway I did a search on your issue and it seems to be pretty common one. It's never happened to me (knock on wood) but perhaps there some special bad thing you have to do - or virus that you have to get - that mangles the Windows Registry or such. The top article was on Windows XP I believe ... but there were more.
