When i start up my 360 with everything connected i get 1 flashing red light.when i disconnect the sata cable from the dvd or the motherboard the system boots up to the dashboard screen.i know the dvd is getting power from the motherboard.
There looks like theres something wrong with your drive. The flashing one red light means that there is a hardware fault. I would of done the same testing procedure as you did, unhook parts to see if you can find the culprit. The dvd drive will need replacing as be the case something on the dvd drive's board may have shorted.

These steps are taken from the support site as always, it's the first website where you should look.
Solution 1: Disconnect and reconnect cables
Here's how:
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Unplug all memory units, controllers, and accessories from your console.
Unplug everything from the back of your console, including power and video cables.
Don't remove the hard drive.
Reconnect your console's power supply.
Reconnect each accessory one at a time, starting with a controller.
After you've reconnected every accessory, turn the console on.
Solution 2: Remove the hard drive
To see whether the problem involves the original Xbox 360 Hard Drive, temporarily remove the hard disk drive. Here's how. Note Not all Xbox 360 consoles include a hard drive. If your Xbox 360 console doesn't have a hard drive, to go Solution 3.
Turn off the console.
Locate the hard drive on the top of the console (or on the left side, depending on how the console is oriented).
Press the release button on the hard drive.
Lift the hard drive away from the console.
If these steps resolve the issue, reattach the hard drive to verify that the error occurs only when your Xbox 360 Hard Drive is connected.
Solution 3: Disconnect memory units or USB flash drives
Here's how:
Turn off your Xbox 360 console.
Unplug any memory units or USB flash drives attached to your console.
Turn on the console.
If these steps resolve the problem, reattach the memory unit or USB flash drive to make sure the error occurs only when it's connected. If this is true, order a replacement memory unit or use another USB flash drive.
Solution 4: Request a repair
If the previous steps don't resolve the single flashing red light issue, there are no additional troubleshooting steps. Your original Xbox 360 console must be repaired at our service center. Start the repair process online.
Disconnect all cables from the Xbox 360 and remove the
faceplate from the front of the console. Lift the plastic tabs on the
outer shell and remove the plastic casing from the machine. Unscrew the
Torx size 7 screws and lift open the metal cover. Unplug both the power
and SATA cables from the rear of the DVD drive and lift it out of the
console. Replace
it with the new DVD drive, and connect the power cable to the unit.
Connect your SATA cable to the DVD drive and a free SATA port on your
computer.Turn on your computer and open a web browser. Download
JungleFlasher and run the program. As of September 2010, JungleFlasher
is the most stable and up-to-date flashing program for Xbox 360, and it
is also the only program capable of flashing Xbox 360 drives from within
Windows (earlier programs used MS-DOS). Click "Flash .BIN to DVD" in
the program's main menu and select your Xbox 360's DVD drive. The
program will flash the new DVD drive for use with your Xbox 360
console.Turn off the computer once the flashing process is complete
and disconnect your SATA cable from the DVD drive and your PC. Reconnect
the Xbox 360 SATA cable to the new DVD drive, then close the metal
cover on the console. Rescrew the Torx size 7 screws and replace the
outer plastic shell on the Xbox 360. Return the faceplate to its
original position then reconnect all external cables and accessories to
the console. Power on the Xbox 360 and the replacement DVD drive will
function normally.
1. Carefully open the Xbox by removing the torx screws and then releasing the clips that hold the case together. The clips and molding pieces all come off easily; pry them open carefully.
2. Load the flash firmware disc into the DVD drive and power off the Xbox. 3. Disconnect the DVD drive from the SATA cable and note the brand of drive used in your Xbox. Currently Microsoft uses Hitachi, Phillips and Toshiba DVD drives in the Xbox 360. Only the Toshiba and Hitachi drives have firmware updates.
4. Connect the DVD drive to your PC with a cross-wired SATA cable interfaced to a compatible SATA port. Confirm that the video cable is connected to the Xbox so that it won't turn off during the flash process.
5. Hold the two loose wires of the cross-wired cable together and press the "Start" button on the Xbox. Separate the wires immediately when the green light begins to flash on the front of the Xbox. The light will begin to flash quickly and the drive will begin to spin as it enters mode "B."
6. Turn the PC on and allow it to fully boot from the DVD drive. If Windows appears to fail the boot, eject the DVD and it will finish booting. You've successfully flashed the drive. 7. Reassemble the Xbox and enjoy playing the backup of your favorite game.

HI, this is a AV cable fault. it is unable to be detected. follow the procedures below to correct this issue. of the procedure dose not produce results, this will confirm that the damage is severe, and you will need to contact Microsoft for a repair ticket.
Check Points
1. Make sure that the AV cable is correctly connected to the Xbox 360 console. 2. Disconnect the AV cable from the Xbox 360 console, and then reconnect the AV cable to the Xbox 360 console. 3. If the four flashing red lights continue to flash, try wiping the metal area of the AV pack with a dry cloth. The metal area is the end that plugs into the console. Wipe the metal area thoroughly, and then try the AV Pack again. 4. If the AV cable is correctly connected but the four red lights are still flashing, substitute a different AV cable if you have one available.

4 red light is a problem with your AV cable. THINGS TO TRY

You can also check to see what the error code is yourself if your not sure whats wrong with it.
To do this, you turn your x-box on, press the Connect button on the console itself and hold it in. Now press the DVD eject button to and look at the lights. it should be flashing 1 light, 2 lights, 3 lights, or 4 lights. grab a piece of paper and write down how many lights are showing. While still holding the connect button, press the eject button again. Write down how many lights are showing again. Then press eject again, and write it down. Then do it one more time and write it down. After you do this, then come back on fixya.com and let me know what error code it is.
1 Red light = 1 2 Red lights = 2 3 Red lights = 3 4 red lights = 0
so an example of what you might write down would be: 0
0
0
1
which would be 0001.
If you figure out the error, you can also visit the following website and determine what it is and if you can fix it yourself:
to play copied dvd's ( i think thats what you typed ), you will need to do a few things, including taking your xbox apart, and connecting it to your computer. You will also need to flash your dvd drive.
Quick NEED list:
1. SATA Cable 2. SATA Card 3. torx screw driver 4. torx 8 and 10 bits 5. Flash / Pen drive (USB)
To do this, your computer has to have some kind of SATA port. You can buy a SATA card for $25.00 at your local computer hardware store. Also make sure you pick up at least an 18 inch SATA cable. Now once you have both of these, then you will have to take your x-box apart.
