How do I program channels in my sharp tv model number 32L-S500 with my remote

You will need to complete a channel scan from the tvs menu. I assume you have basic cable and that your cable company is still providing analog channels for you to be able to pick up any transmission on this telvision with the digital changeover and all.

Sounds like a video problem. You could have bad solder joints in the video circuit. Try knocking on the side of the tv set when the problem occurs it might confirm the diagnostic. Otherwise you have some intermittent components that need to be replaced. If you feel handy with a soldering iron you can go inside and knock around the circuit board to pinpoint the source of the problem. Otherwise you might need the help of a local repairman. Is your RCA remote a universal remote? Do you know the model number of the remote, usually found inside the battery cover?
You can usually find the codes from: http://www.rcaaccessories.com/rcaaccessories/RcaaccessoriesController.do?ACTION_TYPE_ID=ACTION_TYPE_CATEGORY&ACTION_CATEGORY_ID=STR_CATEGORY_UNIVERSAL_REMOTES
FIND your model number, GOTO Support & Service Manuals, THEN select CODE LIST.
If it is a universal remote, you can program it to do BASIC functions for your Sharp TV, like power on/off, mute, channel & volume up/down, pretty much it. You wont be able to access any of the menu functions.

A) Look for a menu button somewhere on the tv itself .. Usually volume or channel buttons serve as up and down, etc..

OR

B) Go to electronics store and buy a universal remote $10-$20 and program it for your tv.

Yuor TV has an issue particularly in the power supply section with regards to the loose components. This issue can be best addressed by having your units' circuitry be resoldered before it could damage some parts.
