do have the driver for the IBM? then use it. if you don't, then what about serial port or RS232. get a converter that is serial to usb converter with the driver will allow you to use your usb through serial port.
There is a good chance the weak spot is your serial to usb adapter. The signals are not compatible so the adapter has a chip and serial driver to convert the signals. Try removing (uninstalling) the driver in the Device Manager. Then download the chipset drivers and run the install. It should identify the correct driver automatically.
