I can only here this at idle. I just bought this 1994 dodge dakota 3.9 v6. It sounds good at first but after warming up begins to knock. It does not have a regular rythm. When I accelerate it goes away. I do get occasional check engine light.
Any suggestions would be helpful
Thank You
Hey Ben,
I have the same issue with my 94 Dakota 4x4 (which I just bought) with a 3.9 Magnum. I've been checking around, I have just changed the oil & added an additive. But I have a lot of sludge in the valve covers so I am going to clean those as well. I have read about a plenum pan gasket failure issue with this engine which causes spark knock and big time oil consumption. If I learn any more, I'll let you know.

This sounds like a sticking lifter. Accelerating increases oil pressure which is pushing more oil through lifters -- that's why it goes away.
If you hven't done this already, change oil & filter, then pour in an additive for unsticking lifters (Pep Boys or the like).
If you've very recently changed oil, just go to the additive.

Firstly, check your engine oil level. If the level is low, the rocker arms in the cylinder heads can tap tap tap... This may be why you're getting an engine light. Check the oil pressure gauge for a reading. If the oil pressure and level is ok, you can run an oil cleaning agent thru your motor with the oil and then do an oil change. Sometimes you can quiet a noisy motor that way.
You could also use a high-mile oil in the motor and see how that works. You can also add an oil additive to help quiet older motors..
hope this helps you.
