Optical sound I have an onkyo SR501, and it was working fine forover 2 years, but now I can not get any sound from optical port # 1. Optical port # 2 is working fine. How can I repair this problem?

I am having the exact same issue. It was fine one day and then stopped the next. I have tested the cables they are fine...its like the port/jack is simply not working. I thought perhaps dust or fibers had gotten in there so i blew it out with some canned air and that didnt help. I am thinking of opening up the box but am not sure what to look for.

I think what I might do is use an optical splitter: http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Bi-Directional-Optical-Toslink-Splitter/dp/B0002MQGR2, does anyone have any experience with this?

Best converter for HDMI (ARC) port on TV to onkyo tx-ds555 receiver

Your receiver appears to have a digital optical input, so no converter would be needed, just an optical fiber cable (TOSLINK) between the two optical ports. However, the manual for your receiver states that several functions don't work unless there is also an analog connection. If you must have those, you can use an HDMI audio extractor. You may also need an adapter cable to convert 3.5 mm stereo audio to a pair of RCA phono plugs to make the analog connection.

I want to hook up my onkyo model tx-sr501. How do I do this?

Hello Brenda
Where do you want to hook your ONKYO and with what you want to connect it to.
There are several steps and a lot of devices can be connected to the Onkyo.
1 Speakers are to be connected on the rear side of the device. as it shows in and on the Instruction manual If you have it.
And for other devices each device has its way of connectors.
Optical to optical and RCA to RCA ...
IT depends on What kind of devices you have.

I'm trying to connect my old onkyo tx-sr502 receiver to my panasonic smart tv and my xbox 360 to get surround sound. Any help would be appreciated

Hello, Since the TX-SR502 does not have HDMI inputs you need to connect the HDMI from the XBox 360 to the TV. You can connect an optical cable from the XBox to the receiver if the XBox has an optical output. If not you can connect the optical out from the TV to the receiver. Connect to the optical #2 port on the receiver and press the video 2 button. You should have audio. Thank you, Onkyo USA

I try to connect a satelite to optical audio input for a digital radio signal. This doesn't work. Is it only possible to use a coax input cable for the radio signal?

The nature of whatever is on the upstream side of a digital signal is invisible to the device at the other end of the cable. Bits is bits, as we say. The undefined 'satelite to optical audio' device is probably at fault or not set right. PLUS, on theOnkyo you have to assign digital inputs. Read the manuals.

No surround sound from my PS3 through the Onkyo 5100. Video OK

Unfortunately only the higher end Onkyo Reciever pass audio over HDMI for sound. 605,705,805,905 exc. Your reciever will carry Video over HDMI but you will need a digital optical cable for sound.
