As silly and bizarre as this may sound... just take the pole and raise it to shoulder height and throw onto the grass at an angle. It may take a few attempts but the pole WILL come apart. I know you think I'm crazy ...but it does work. It's almost like a Chinese finger trap.
Dig below frost line, depends upon where you live, but at least two feet deep. I would make the hole about a foot wide. Pole diameter 3-4 inches in diameter.
Usually these are manufactured with either a flare on the end as you describe, or the entire length of the pole tapers slightly. If this is not the case, my guess is that you received 3 of the same pole piece, and it was mis-packed at the manufacturer.
First set the 3 eleven piece poles with 2 crossed across the tent and one across the front portion. Feed them thru the channels and buckles. Then put the pin hooks into the bottom of the poles. You will need to arc the poles to get the pins into the end of the pole. Next put the poles that are smaller into the channels and buckles for the two vestibules. Again put the pin hooks into the same pole ends as the back crossed one.
Stake the tent to the ground by driving the stakes thru the pin rings starting at the 6 corners of the tent. Pull front of vestibule taut and secure in place by driving stakes thru webbing loops at base.
Install the rainfly by draping it over the top of the tent. Hook each of the 8 S hooks onto the provided loops. Secure the rainfly to the poles by wrapping the velcro straps around the poles underneath the rainfly.
These instructions should be in the pocket on the wall in the main section of the tent in the pocket with red writing.
