Besides, having a genuine license allows you to windows update your vista to the latest patch, fixes and security updates.

If the laptop has a Vista sticker on its base, then the BIOS is programmed to accept Vista and only Vista. The only way to install XP on that machine is if HP has a BIOS update for that model in their support files. If they do, download the BIOS file and install it. Reboot and if the machine boots up and stabilizes, shut down, insert the XP installation key and reboot.

Is it xp or vista?
For xp If you didn't set up an admin password,Then the password is blank.so don't enter anything,just hit enter,You can also login as admin,by Typing Administrator (with a capitol A )no password.

For vista Try right click and select,Run as administrator.

Note:The admin account is hidden and has to be activated to work,If this is the case,I can tell you how to do this as well.

You also need to install the motherboard specific drivers to activate the various devices (sound etc). The motherboard manufacturer should have the current drivers available for download.

There is 2 ways to do this, firstly you can create a floppy disk with the updated bios flash file on ( not recommended to a novice ) or reinstall XP and updated the bios by downloading it from the manufacturers website and installing it that way. After that you can install Vista.

The BIOS has to match the files on the DVD. If you install it on a different make of computer or on an older version of the same make it will not activate.
What you are doing is illegal. You must pay for a licence for Vista if you install it. An XP licence does NOT cover you to run Vista. You must buy a copy of retail version Vista from a shop.

ive looked for a download for bios for vista and i cant find anything on that. did you install or did it come with your desktop.you should be able to restart your computer and press F1 or F2 to get to the bios

the reason is the bios, when these pc's are built they are built to run Vista and the bios version is refering to vista and not XP, you will need to download and install an earlier version if this is possible, install XP then instal vista on a seperate partition if you require it.
