Most treadles have a bobbin filling mechanism that attaches to the a mated part near the wheel then you lower on to the treadle wheel to make it spin and wind the bobbin or do what I do...when I need something translated from German, I ask my my Bavarian Mom! If that is not an option find a new German friend, eat a your local German restaurant, or call the local embassy! Be sure to take the manual with you. More tedious and less fun is typing the German directions into a translation app.
I had the same problem and found the right manual in German! However this manual listed lots of other model numbers that it covered and there was a match on the singerco website for model number 5910 and all the diagrams and instructions appear to be correct - so far!

I think you can get a free manual from the Singer site for this machine. http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
Just type in the model number not the model name e.g 288 and click on search.
Choose the second option from the list by clicking on free download!
You will see that this manual is the same for a number of model numbers.
