Chances are, you're using software that isn't really that good for your computer. I'm not a fan of Power DVD.
The best utility I have found for capturing video is WinDV. It's free. And not only can you capture with it without dropping a frame, but thanks to the firewire interface, you can control your camcorder directly!

You need to buy a TV card which comes with audio /video composite sockets. these are female RCA or phono sockets which are also found on your camera.TV cards come with their own software to be able to capture pictures from your Hi 8 Camcorder using the av cables like the ones you use from your DVD to your TV set. There are other cards which carry the av sockets and come with video capture software. These cards are usually PCI cards which are fitted into your PCI slot in your PC motherboard. One other software that comes with such a card is Pinnacle Studio. Its called the Pinnacle AV/DV pci capture card. The one I use is just a DC 10 which works with Studios version 8. Please try any of these cards for your video capture

You need to get some AV cables and some sort of MPG4 Video/TV capture card USB, or PCI, whatever, also software to display captured images, now you connect up the camera to the input on the capture card, press play on VCR and Record on PC, and stream the video to the PC and save it wherever you want. Then you can manipulate after saving anyhow you wish. This software hardware combination will also allow you to watch,a Movie streamed in, and output to TV as well.at same time...with the right Video out card, any dual head monitor card will do,
Upon installing your Philips SAA7130 TV tuner/Fm radio/ Video PCI Capture Card. You can switch your PC on, and get connected to the internet without opening any window. Left click the Control Panel, and the Add hardware wizard. Then follow the instruction. You will be prompted to load your CD installer software driver, if the PC cannot find any driver soft- ware in the O.S., In case you don't have a CD, your PC will look it by itself at the internet since you are already connected, just follow and wait to get it installed. Hope this helps.
You need and AV capture card to do that if you dont have a firewire port.
Use the supplied AV cable that came with the camcorder, connect the audio (left/white, right/red and yellow/video) to the capture card AV inputs and start capturing. You can make the setting on the capture card, whether it should be captured in DVD or VCD format

Do you have tv tuners installed and setup properly? Media Center 2005 is just the software, the computer needs to have hardware tuners in it and hooked up to external antenna or cable.
