My 36" RCA 9yr. old TV has half a picture with the upper half compressed. Do I bother having it repaired or looked at? This TV has guide plus as a feature that does not maintain the channel lineup. I do not have any controls on the TV to fiddle with. It has an on screen menu that now is also half compressed.
If the only part effected is the upper half, then the problem is a defective capacitor in the vertical circuit. This is a relatively simple repair for any service shop. Expect a parts cost in the $20 range. They should also be checking for poor solder connections at the vertical IC as well.

The vertical deflection amplifier has failed. They should be able to find the bad part easily. Get a quote before they begin and decide the economics of it. The actaul bad part is probably less than $10 cost.
