Sounds like you bought the updated version that over corrects the "too much" ice which jams the mechanism to where it breaks the unit. This is my second friggen Samsung as my 1st 4 door quatro was replaced under their lemon law. Spending $2500 I thought I was buying quaility, instead I bought greif. I'm still working with Best Buy to get Samsung to fix the icemaker with it's current problem which sounds like yours. First, RECYCLE is a position that allows water to continue to circulate through the system, BYPASSING the filter. If there is a problem with the system, like an air intrusion/leak, by putting the filter in RECYCLE you can determine if the problem is in the filter, or another part, of your system.
As for how long to run the pump, it can be ran 24 hours a day. Normally, the average run time is 8 to 10 hours a day. Most city codes require that pool water is "turned over" one time daily. This means that all of the water in the pool is ran through the filter at least once a day. Usually, 8 to 10 hours will give you that requirement.

You should return the product. This is relatively common, it needs a new battery. The battery will not take a charge. Here's the thing, batteries for cordless phones are a fortune. You should either return it or if you can't probably just buy a whole knew one.
