Compaq power supply HP212 (old)

Almost any standard ATX psu will fit this model, 86mm x 150 mm x 140 mm I would think. (PSUs come in standard sizes, most are ATX with depths into the case of 140mm upwards. Your old PSU s 140mm deep, so I should get one that also that deep. Higher powered ones can be can be as deep as 180 mm which wouldn't fit in your computer). It would be better if you bought a good brand one such as Antec, Corsair Silverstone, Seasonic, even an a Zalman or Akasa to name but a few, of at least equivalent power (it does not matter if it is a higher rated power, your computer will only take what it needs). Be certain that the PSU has enough of the correct type of connectors for your PC - Molex 4 pin power, minimolex for floppy if you use that, and SATApower if you have those, and 4 pin (I think for your pc) "P4" connector for your mainboard/CPU, and a 20+4 (20 pin with detachable 4 pin section for 24 pin m/b) pin motherboard connector. Be certain that it will accept the correct input voltage for your location (many will accept 90-240V ac now). You might try to get a second hand one.

Presuming you mean the Earthwatts 500:
Should work, though the Earthwatts has the 24 pin ATX instead of the 20-pin.

You just need to snap the 24-pin connector apart to make it work as a 20-pin. It can be snapped back together for future motherboards.

"If the LED is still flashing (it should not flash with all connectors removed), plug the power cable into a different power outlet that is known to be good. If the LED still flashes, the power supply should be replaced."


Cause?
The leading cause is the computer is dirty inside, to include the Power Supply
The next cause is that Electrolytic Capacitors have failed inside the Power Supply.

Solution is to replace the Power Supply.

The Power Supply used is the ATX form factor. The type of Power Supply used in over 80 percent of PC computers out there, and very readily available.

Size of the power supply case is approximately 6 inches Wide, 5-1/2 inches long (5.5), and 3-1/2 inches Tall. (3.5)

It is a 250, or 300 Watt generic unit, probably made by Bestec, Delta, or HiPro.

Bad Power Supply. Weak voltage power rail.

Has enough power to light LED lights, and maybe spin fans, but not enough to turn the Processor on.

1) ALL of the LED lights on at once use less than 1 Watt of power.

2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.

3) A typical Processor uses 51 to 125 Watts. Depends on what Processor it is.

IF, the SATA harddrive has a provision for using a 4-pin standard Peripheral power cable, AND a SATA power cable, ONLY USE THE SATA POWER CABLE.

If you use both you will burn up the SATA harddrive.

The Green LED light you see flashing indicates you have a bad Power Supply.

Computer unplugged from power, computer on a table, computer case open, observe Anti-Static Precautions.
Clean the inside of the computer out with a can of compressed air for computers, (Or may take two, and a few Q-tips), and replace the Power Supply.

Relative easy. Open up the case and be careful to see what wires are connect. Replace each one carefully. There is the big wire that containes a bundle. This goes to the motherboard. There is only one way to install it. There is a 4 prong molex wire that goes to the hard drive. There are extra wires just in case you need to add another hard drive for example. There shoudl be 4 screws holding the power supply in place. Remove them from the back of the PC

well the PSU cables for the mobo should only be able to be hooked to one place on the board. i'm not sure if this is a 20 pin and a 4 pin or just a 20 pin, but the 20 pin connector should only fit one place and snap in. you don't need a diagram, if you're wondering about all the rest of the cables it doesn't matter where you plug what 4 pin connector to. as long as they're connected..

why wont you buy a new power supply or a plug that converts from a 20 pin to a 24 pin

In many cases the additional 4 pin section slides up and off of the main power plug for use in your particular unit.

Gee. If HP recomends you not to hook up the extra four pins it must be because the four either go nowhere,which may cause a short or ground condition.Or that the extra pins will power something that will then  be in excess andd cause it too burn out. They know what will happen and for that rwason caution you not to do it. Of course it is you machine and  if you have extra money to replace things with go ahead and do it if you really want to know that badly.
