The gears ARE probably fine. The problem is a slightly bent shift fork. Since the engine is apart I would STRONGLY advise you replace the shift fork. If nothing else it is cheap insurance that you won't have to replace it four weeks later because it won't shift into first. I have replaced shift forks that looked perfectly good but were bent such the you couldn't get into 2nd gear. Looks can be deceiving.

Sounds like you already know the problem. Find someone who can rebuild the transmission in it.

Did you change plugs? If you did chek the plug to see if piston has hit the end of plug. Do a compresion check Jim OMC retired Mech

.hAVE YOU TRYED TAKING THE CARB OF DRAINING IT CLEANING IT AND DRYING IT. CHANGE THE SPARK PLUG JUST IN CASE YOU HAVE GOT WATER INTO THE HEAD START IT UP AND LET IT JUST TICK OVER FOR 20 MINS. JUST AN IDEA STUFF TO ILLIMNATE. GOOD LUCK BUDDY
