Can u take a 220v plug from a craftsman air compressor and rewire it to work on 110v outlet

  • J Rosado Jul 10, 2019

The dual voltage motor leads or connection terminal board requires reconfiguring according to the voltage used or applied. Wiring diagram should be on motor name plate or connections cover.

If the compressor motor is dual voltage then yes, otherwise no.
Notice the current draw is twice at low voltage than that of high voltage in a dual voltage motor.

@JRosado.... how do I check to see if it's what you call dual voltage ...

and what did u mean by " Notice the current draw is twice at low voltage than that of high voltage in a dual voltage motor." ?

  • J Rosado Jul 10, 2019

The motor name plate electrical ratings should indicate 110/220 for dual voltage, or 120/240 for volts, low volts/high volts If so, notice the Amperes, 30/15, 30 amps for low volts and 15 for high volts, as example numbers. The product of volts and amps in alternating current is called voltamps. A motor may need about 1,000 volt amps per horse of power. Your 5hp motor may need 5,000 VA, twice the amps at 120 volts than at 240, 5000/120 = 40+ amps. Try the formula for currently wired 240 volt motor, 20+ amperes.
We try to keep the amps low due to economy and power loss in conductor and electric transmission lines.
I square R equals power in watts. I represents amperes or current, R represents electrical resistance in ohms. Conductors offer electrical resistance and while amperes flow, there is a power loss in the line dissipated as heat.

If the motor has only one voltage rating stamped on the motor nameplate, the it is single voltage. It must have two voltages, two amperage, for the motor to be dual voltage. The voltage being used or applied is configured accordingly, motor instructions, in the motor connection cover.

SOURCE: change from 220v to 110v on air compressor

I can't blame you for askig, but here's my response. 5 HP is 3750 running watts. or about 35 amps at 110 volts and it would take somewhere around 50 amps to start it provided the motor could even be wired for 110 which I don't believe it can and for that exact reason. I'm sorry, but it's just not practical.

No major worries. Only "Fuse" would have gone. You can get this replaced with some good electronic repair shops. Might charge you around Rs. 100 (else Rs. 500 since it is a "US return" item :) )

Making my 220v appliance work on an 110v outlet

If you are using a 220V-240V appliance at 110V, you will need a transformer. If you are using a 110V appliance at 220V-240V, you can also use a transformer but may be able to get away with a (cheaper) converter though not with all appliances.

I have a Craftsman air compressor model 919.156520.What is the gallon capacity and what is the horse power

This compressor has a 33 gallon tank and a 3 to 5 hp (rated)motor. Sears , however, rates their motor power rather differently. I would guess that the actual hp is more like one to one and a half horsepower, going by the amp draw. Usually, a 3 to 5 hp range compressor will only run on 220v and this unit is 110v.

What is required to use it as far as electrical outlet.

Dryers come in both 110V and 220V.
If you plug a 220V dryer into a 110V socket, it will run very slow.
If you plug a 110V dryer into a 220V socket, it will burn up.
If you can find a 220V extension cord, then you should be able to use it.

Can I rewire my 220 compressor to 110 ?

The short answer is: No. The longer answer is, the motor and controls were designed to run on 220 Volts, and as such cannot simply be re-wired for 110 Volts. You basically have 3 options: 1) Have a licensed electrician wire in a 220V circuit to your shop/garage/shed for the compressor. 2) Change out the motor for one designed for 110V (finding one that will work could be difficult, and might require modification of mounts, spindles, gears etc and probably not worth the trouble...but technically possible) 3)purchase a step UP transformer which can turn 110V North American household current into 220V.

I accidentally plugged in my pulmoneb in a 220v outlet

plugging a 110v device into a 220v outlet is not likely, as the plugs are a different configuration. In the event that you somehow managed to do that, your device is probably fried, as that would be to much voltage. Hate to say it; but you are probably gonna need a new one

How to use it if we have 220V outlet?

If the AC unit is 110V then you must plug it into a regular 110V outlet. You cannot plug it into the 220V outlet. Either get a bigger 220V unit or use a 12 gauge extension cord to get it to a 110V outlet.

How to change Emglo air compressor from 220v to 110v. Compressor is running at half speed when plugged into standard wall outlet. I bought the compressor new in the early "90's" and since then...

Hi Pete,
On the side of the motor on the label should be a wiring diagram. The diagram will tell you how to wire fro high 220v and low 110v ...
If the nameplate is single voltage only then the motor cannot be rewired for the lower voltage...
Also check the motor RPM nameplate as compared to the others...you may have a 1725 motor and the newer ones a 3450 motor...that would give them double the RPM's if the gearing or pulley sizes are the same...so.. if you have the right voltage and the RPM's of the motor are the lower, then you possibly could change the pulley sizes to speed up the compressor...

Lots to check and think about...

Mdl.919.165250need to change wiring from 110v to220vshow wiring diagram for compresor

Your compressor was made by Porter Cable for Sears. The motor / pump is used on many different compressor models depending on tank size and style options. None of the models /including yours/ were ever designed for 115/220v. I did happen to see a compressor that was built for european destination that was 220v. It was easy to identify because it had a two round prong male plug (it could not be wired for 115v however). Good Luck
