Go to any good office supply store and buy a tin of compressed air.

Or go to a spray shop who use oil free lines.

Take the battery out and give the machine a good long blast

Better still take off the main covers underneath before you do so

Make sure that you do not use any air supply that has oil or water in it

Disassemble the heatsink, there are nooks and crannies that air blast that cannot get out, or only sends back to vanes of the fan, then when turned on, they go back into the heatsink vents.

Reassemble and apply heatsink compound to the cpu portion.

Pc just cuts offf and wont come back on for a while how do i trouble shoot it

You might try cleaning out the inside of the case with some compressed air.Make sure pc is unplugged before doing this.
Dust and dirt accumulating inside pc will make it overheat and pc's do not like too much heat buildup. Also, if the thermal grease on the CPU is getting old, the CPU will overheat and that could shut it down. How old is your pc?Realplying New thermal grease onto the Processor will allow heat to transfer off of it better than before. It just sounds to me as a heat related issue.Make sure too that all your fans are operating ok.
including the CPU fan.

Computer freezes on startup or after having it on standby. If I leave it on for any extended period of time I have to manually power it down and back on to get it to work. I usually have 3 or 4 freezes...

As an initial solution, I would recommend checking to see if the cooling fan is running properly. Also, you could have a buildup of dust around the CPU/heat sink. A thorough cleaning to remove dust and dirt may well do the job.

Just as an aside, you haven't been overclocking the CPU, have you? That could be a problem.

My fan isn't working. Could cleaning the fan make it work?

Cleaning the fan won't do it. If it's not turning then the bearings are probably gunked up. Replacing the fan is the best solution. Your Gateway laptop still has a screw to be undone. It's probably behind a label or inside a door. Once the screws are gone the top lifts off easily.

Need to replace the case of a gateway mt3705

Replacing a case is one of the most involved repairs on a laptop because you are basically disassembling the entire thing. You will want to be very careful as there are plastic clips you can break, start by removing the harddrive, the memory door / memory and battery. Take all the screws from the bottom (tape them down on a piece of paper to remember their position, you can write down labels from where they came from. when this is done you should be able to remove the cd drive and lift the keyboard. Remove all the screws from under the keyboard, and remove the ribbon connectors. The upper and lower plastic should snap apart with a little tension. After your inside you can remove the rest of the screws to take out the motherboard. These instructions are generic to most laptops, your should be fairly similar.
